The application deadline for Phase 1 of the U.S. EDA Tech Hubs Program is August 15. As part of EDA's Notice of Funding Opportunity, EDA will designate at least 20 Tech Hubs and separately award grants to strengthen collaboration and accelerate strategy development for Tech Hubs. If you are applying for this funding opportunity, EDA encourages you to start your application today. U.S. EDA is accepting applications for its $50 million Build to Scale (B2S) program to support projects that strengthen equitable ecosystems and increase access to capital for innovators, entrepreneurs and startups. Demand for office and retail space will be generally lower in 2030 than it was in 2019, according to a new study from McKinskey Global Institute. This study presents a model that aims to show the "problem will only worsen over the next seven years." In every city studied, the percentage of office space that was vacant rose from 2019 to 2022 (with the increases ranging from two to 13 percentage points). The study notes the "demand shortfall . . . along with growing supply resulting from the completion of new office buildings, will boost vacancy rates." Read more.

The Inflation Reduction Act added smart windows to the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), allowing building owners, including tax-exempt entities such as universities, to receive a 30-50% tax credit or direct rebate on dynamic glass. Read more.

National tech training nonprofit Per Scholas is expanding to Houston, joining Ion District, Houston’s 16-acre innovation district developed by Rice University. Through an innovation relationship with Ion, Per Scholas Houston will offer its tuition-free technology skills training from its newest campus located at 4201 Main Street. Read more. | | |
Doctors and their patients could know with greater confidence whether pancreatic cysts are benign or potentially malignant, and if surgery is required to remove them, by using a new diagnostic test currently in development by a startup at Discovery Park District at Purdue. Amplified Sciences, a clinical-stage life sciences diagnostic company that licenses Purdue University innovations, has received a Phase I SBIR grant of $400,000 from the National Cancer Institute to develop the test. The company focuses on accurately detecting and categorically assessing the risks of debilitating diseases. Read more. | | |

Emagine Solutions Technology, a University of Arizona Center for Innovation startup and winner of our AURP 2019 Innovation Award, has been selected as one of 15 Phase 2 awardees of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Women's Health Hypertension Innovator Award Competition. The $75,000 award will fund Emagine's "The Journey Pregnancy" platforms including their patient app, provider software and handheld ultrasound. Emagine's technologies help make pregnancy safer using streamlined monitoring. Read more.

However, those headwinds have not proven to be insurmountable.
