The CHIPS and Science Act was passed to help accelerate the research and commercialization of critical technologies and create new regional high-tech hubs across the U.S. This new law also creates ARPA-H (Health), a flexible heath technology agency. The U.S. Small Business Administration is hosting America’s Seed Fund Week (May 15-18) to help entrepreneurs become more aware of Small Business Innovation Research & Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR/STTR) opportunities and the awards process. The week includes a virtual Startup Expo on May 15 featuring up-and-coming SBIR/STTR awardees and open houses on May 17 with the funding agencies. Register here to participate in all of the Week's activities. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released a paper last week outlining its vision and strategy for a National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC), a key component of the R&D program established by the 2022 CHIPS and Science Act. The NSTC would support and extend U.S. leadership in semiconductor research, design, engineering and advanced manufacturing, plus establish technical centers by expanding and improving research facilities across the country or by building new, advanced facilities. University of California (UC) researchers disclosed 1,718 inventions in 2021, an average of five inventions per day ranging from agriculture, biotechnology and computing, according to a new report based on data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. As part of this dynamic, UC research in 2021 resulted in 80 new startups. In 2022, the UC research enterprise was awarded 570 U.S. utility patents. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology ranked second with 343 utility patents. Read more.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) is seeking one or more organizations to develop, launch and run a Builder Platform to support the NSF Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, awardees. The three-year Builder Platform contract will be a central component of the NSF Engines program, functioning as a human-centered network of support structures and offerings that will empower the NSF Engines with the tools, skills, networks and access to capital needed to thrive and attain success. Read more.

A number of AURP members attended and presented at the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA) Annual Meeting last month. Brian Darmody, AURP Chief Strategy Officer, participated on a panel (photo) on harnessing higher education for economic development. Mary Morris with UM BioPark (AURP Member) spoke on creating communities of innovation around universities. Other AURP Sponsors and Members on hand included TEDCO, MEDCO, Maryland Department of Commerce, UMD Discovery District, St. Mary’s County's AeroPark Innovation District and Wexford Science + Tech.
The Oklahoma City Innovation District has joined a new cohort that is part of the Global Network of Innovation Districts (GIID). GIID launched the Global Network in March 2022 with an initial cohort of 23 innovation districts and is now expanding the network to include approximately 20 additional districts. Those innovation districts are exploring a range of issues, including how to leverage unique R&D strengths and efforts to attract industry and investment. Learn more.
Integral Molecular has become the first tenant to move into Philadelphia's One uCity Square, a 13-story, 400,000 square foot commercial research building that will celebrate its opening later this year. Integral Molecular, a key player in Philly's biotech community, just announced the official opening of its 32,000 square foot headquarters and integrated research facilities that will include its pandemic preparedness laboratories. One uCity is a joint project by AURP Members: Wexford Science + Technology and University City Science Center. Read more.
AURP Members were both winners and presenters at iNBIA's International Conference last week in Detroit.

The Innovation Hub at Texas Tech University Research Park was a winner as well as First Flight Venture Center (in photo; Krista Covey), based at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina. First Flight Venture Center won the "Randall Whaley Award" given to a center focused on technology companies. This award is named after the former director of University City Science Center, Randall Whaley, a long-time AURP member, who introduced the concept of incubation for tech companies.

AURP Member and Sponsor Momentum Labs also spoke at the conference. In addition, AURP's Brian Darmody participated on panel with SSTI and the Innovation Park of Tallahassee (AURP Member) on using government funding to build communities of innovation.
