bwtech@UMBC's Ellen Hemmerly to Retire
AURP Past President and longtime member, Ellen Hemmerly, recently announced her plan to retire this summer as Executive Director of bwtech@UMBC.

A true pioneer in the research and technology park community, Ellen has led bwtech@UMBC into becoming a vital and pathbreaking research park serving Greater Baltimore and the state of Maryland. 

Since 1995, Hemmerly and her team have grown bwtech@UMBC to hosting 130 companies in a range of industries, including IT, life science and clean energy.

On behalf of all of us in the AURP community, we sincerely thank you, Ellen, for your hard work and dedication to driving innovation and entrepreneurship! 

Action at Tech Parks Arizona
New Executive Director Hired for UA Center for Innovation

Tech Parks Arizona has announced the expansion of the University of Arizona (UA) Center for Innovation team with the appointment of Eric Smith as its new executive director. Smith comes to the UA Center for Innovation after serving as the commercialization network manager for Tech Launch Arizona.

Groundbreaking for UA Center for Innovation at Oro Valley, Sep. 4

The UA Center for Innovation, in collaboration with Oro Valley Innovation Labs, is ready to break ground, September 4, to start building a biotech-focused incubator for startups in Oro Valley. The UA Center for Innovation at Oro Valley will provide space and commercialization programs for nascent life science businesses to conduct research and product development.
Wexford Science & Technology Opens Wexford Innovation Center in RI
Wexford Science & Technology last month joined with Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo along with teams from Brown University, the Cambridge Innovation Center and Johnson & Johnson to open the Wexford Innovation Complex, a 196,000-square-foot building that will serve as a hub for education and commerce in Providence’s Innovation and Design District. Perkins and Will Plans for
Oklahoma Innovation District Move Forward
The Oklahoman features the new comprehensive design plan by Perkins and Will to develop the Oklahoma Health Center into a comprehensive Innovation District.

The CEO’s Corner – Brian Darmody
AURP CEO Brian Darmody will co-present a workshop on "Innovation Districts and Research Parks in U-I Collaborations" at the upcoming UIDP29: Conference in Columbus, OH, Sept. 16-19.

Brian will join with AURP President Dan Duncan and other presenters on Sept. 16 to discuss how to find champions, funding and stakeholders for university research parks/innovation districts. There will also be a session on winning the race to land the Amazon HQ2 in the Washington, DC area. 

Also, catch this Q&A interview in Maryland’s Business Monthly with Brian on his career at the University of Maryland. He also talks about his plans to continue growing AURP’s membership and provide new programs to support the university research parks community in the US and internationally.
For AURP staff news, Vanessa Towle, who has been our lead accounting and bookkeeping rep for AURP for the past 8 years, will leave AURP this week to take on some new exciting professional opportunities. We want to thank her for helping keep AURP both balanced and in the black over these years! Her customer service was stellar.
