AURP IDENTIFIES KEY WAYS TO IMPROVE THE IMPACT OF FEDERALLY FUNDED RESEARCH
AURP’s Government Relations Committee, co-chaired by former AURP Presidents Brian Darmody from the University of Maryland and David Baker, formerly of University Technology Park at IIT, authored a report with input from AURP members, that identifies ways to improve the economic impact of federally funded research. The report was developed for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) based upon a request from the federal government.

The report included some of the following suggestions to improve the impact of federal funds in research:

  • Support research park infrastructure and the development of Communities of Innovation
  • Keep more corporate R&D in the United States by eliminating the link to university intellectual-property licensing in “private use” IRS restrictions in university facilities
  • Improve university technology transfer
  • Support proof-of-concept and applied research funding
  • Improve technology commercialization from federal laboratories by creating a Congressionally chartered technology intermediary organization
  • Connect federal researchers with private companies through expanded use of Entrepreneurs in Residence and other programs
  • Create more private sector involvement near federal lab and regional research clusters
  • Expand the federal corporate R&D tax credit
  • Reform export controls
  • Encourage entrepreneurship as a national goal and include entrepreneurship in STEM initiatives

AURP Global University-Industry Innovation Summit
The University-Industry Innovation Summit held September 1st & 2nd at the Jiangbei New Area Industrial Technology Research & Innovation Park in Nanjing, China hosted 180 academic and business leaders with speakers from around the world, including AURP members, I-Hung Li, Mark Romney, David Baker and Ken Marcus.

An additional park meeting and summit at TechCode followed in Beijing.
