We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Brian Baird, educator, psychologist and former six-term congressman, has been selected as the next president of Antioch University's Seattle campus effective July 1.  

As Congressman for Washington State's third district in the US House of Representatives, Dr. Baird follows in the tradition of Antioch's first President, Horace Mann, who also served in Congress.

2013 Distinguished Alumna 

 

Pamela Sackett, BA in Liberal Studies, 1990, is this year's recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award. She is the founding artist and director of the Emotion Literacy Advocates (ELA), a nonprofit organization that utilizes language, visual arts, theater, music, and science to create learning tools that are used to address cultural and environmental issues with social-emotional awareness. Pamela's work generating and producing art in service to social change began in the theater with her creation of Crazy in the Mainstream, a play based on the stories of six mentally and emotionally ill people that was performed by the story-tellers and facilitated by the Washington Alliance for the Mentally Ill. Pamela later achieved an artist residency position in the Seattle Repertory Theatre Company's Outreach and Education program at the King County Youth Detention jail school.

Since ELA's creation, her organization has produced a variety of unique learning tools. Some of these tools have been endorsed by the Seattle Public School District's Health Education Department, used by twenty-three social service agencies in Oregon, Idaho and Washington, and crafted into educational cinema tour that traveled throughout Washington state. Pamela has preformed on public affairs radio programs and during conferences as well as various arts venues in Seattle, Canada and Mexico. She is also the author of several books of rhythmic prose. Her latest work titled Booing Death: with Shpilkes & Rhyme creatively tackles death from an emotion literacy advocate's perspective and personal vantage point .     

Steve Brown, MA in Whole Systems Design, 2011, was recently awarded a year-long Education Pioneers Fellowship. Education Pioneers seek to identify, train, and connect leaders who are committed to re-imagining education. Steve will receive professional development and support from Education Pioneers while he works at College for America to design and implement a learning community that engages students and nurtures their productive persistence.

Leihla Scharlau, MA in Whole Systems Design, 2013 will be receiving the 2013 Washington E3 Green Apple Award as Informal Educator of the Year on June 27 at the McKinstry Innovation Center in Seattle. This award recognizes an informal educator in Washington state who has demonstrated a positive impact on education and advocacy for the environment.
