We have definitely entered the cold and snowy time of year and we are experiencing colder temperatures and more snow than usual. And while there are more and more cold and snowy days, we still have many students who walk or ride their bikes to school.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about crosswalk safety and how to navigate the concrete jungle around our amazing school.

Aspen View Academy, in partnership with Castle Rock Police Department and the Town of Castle Rock Streets Division, has developed a safe route guide for those walking or biking to school. We are all committed to providing information to families to help them make decisions regarding where to cross and walk to and from school.

Remember, while a student may know the route to school, they may not be able to make safe decisions when crossing the street.

The following are some additional safety tips when using the crosswalks:

  • Cross only at corners and crosswalks.
  • Keep looking left and right as you cross.
  • Do not enter the crosswalk until all cars have come to a complete stop. Even if you pushed the crosswalk button to cross. Wait for cars to stop.
  • Be a role model and show students what proper pedestrian behavior you want them to mirror.
  • Do not be a distracted pedestrian. Remind students to remove ear buds and not to use their cell phones when crossing the street.
  • Look left, right, left before crossing and make eye contact with the driver. Many drivers are distracted which means you want to be sure they see you and they have come to a complete stop.
  • Assist those under 10 years of age while walking and crossing the street. Young children do not possess the cognitive skills or depth perception to safely judge the distance and speed of oncoming vehicles.
  • Parents, please stay off your phones or other devices while you are driving on school property or through the school zone on Low Meadow Blvd.

Riding a bike to school additional safety tips:

  • Wear a helmet! It is the most effective way to prevent a head injury in the event of a crash when participating in any wheeled sport.
  • Walk your bike on school property and when using crosswalks.
  • When riding a bicycle, do not carry anything in your hands. Make sure backpack straps do not hang down into wheels or pedals.

In addition to these safety tips Aspen View Academy has increased the number of staff assisting parents and students either crossing the street or in the drop off / pick up lanes. Aspen View Academy strives to keep everybody safe whether coming to school or leaving school.

Intent to Return to Aspen View Academy

Please take a moment to complete the Intent to Return form for every student currently enrolled at AVA. This helps us know how many new students we have openings for in the upcoming school year and reserves your spot (You do not need to do the DCSD Open Enrollment process if you are already enrolled in any K-7th grade at AVA).

This form must be filled out and submitted online by February 16th, 2022 to reserve your student's spot for the 2022 –23 school year. Please complete the form for every student returning to AVA next school year.

This form is specific to Aspen View Academy. If this form is not submitted by February 16th, 2022, AVA will assume you are not returning to AVA and your child's spot may be given to the next person on the lottery list.

PLEASE NOTE: OPEN ENROLLMENT AT ANOTHER SCHOOL OVERRIDES THIS INTENT TO RETURN.

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade.

2nd Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 2nd grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of February 14. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

Please click on the above picture for more information about CoGAT.

Tardies and Morning Carpool Reminders

Morning carpool is from 7:45am – 8:10am

We are seeing an increase in the number of tardy students in the morning. As a reminder, the morning drop-off begins at 7:45am and continues to 8:10am.

We have observed quite a few cars arriving on AVA property after 8:10am meaning your child will be tardy. School officially begins at 8:00 (Middle School)/8:15 (Elementary School), so it is important to have kids in class and ready to go. Classes begin at 8:00am/8:15am and having students arrive to class tardy is a distraction that can easily be avoided. If your child is coming from an appointment you must provide a doctor's note in order for this to be excused.

Middle School Students will receive a tardy if they are not in their classroom by 8:00am. Five unexcused tardies in one month results in a loss of dress of choice day.

Elementary Students

If your child arrives in the building after 8:12am they will be marked tardy and need to be walked in by a parent.

Thank you for making Aspen View Academy the best school!
