In our ongoing adventure with Capturing  Kids' Hearts, let's explore the heartbeat of our mission: "If you have a child's heart, you have their head!" At the core of Capturing Kids' Hearts is the belief that meaningful connections begin with the heart. Our interactions are not just about the exchange of information; they're about forging authentic connections that leave a lasting impression.

At the heart of Capturing Kids' Hearts lies a simple yet profound truth: when we connect with a child on an emotional level, we open the door to their mind. It's not just about imparting knowledge; it's about creating an environment where every child feels valued, seen, and heard. The CKH processes are designed to cultivate this heart-head harmony, fostering a genuine connection between educators and students.

Capturing Kids' Hearts extends beyond the confines of the classroom. It's a commitment to nurturing the whole child—recognizing their individuality, dreams, and challenges. By embracing the principle that "If you have a child's heart, you have their head," we acknowledge the unique journey each child is on and tailor our approach to meet them where they are.

When a child's heart and head are in sync, the impact resonates far beyond the classroom walls. Students are not just recipients of knowledge; they become active participants in their own learning journey. They feel empowered to ask questions, share ideas, and explore their potential. This heart-head harmony sets the stage for a positive and enriching educational experience that extends well into their future.

As we continue our voyage with Capturing Kids' Hearts, let's remember the transformative power of heart-head harmony. By nurturing the hearts of our students, we inherently unlock the vast potential of their minds. Let our hearts guide our interactions, engage both minds and hearts, maintain a positive attitude, and make decisions that reflect our commitment to creating a nurturing and inspiring learning environment.

Together, we're not just shaping minds; we're capturing hearts.

General Announcements

We are seeing an increase in the number of tardy students in the morning.

For Middle School Students, If your child arrives in the building after 7:58am they will be marked tardy (they should be in their seats by 8:00).

For Elementary Students, If your child arrives in the building after 8:12am they will be marked tardy (they should be in their seats by 8:15). After 8:15am you need to park your car and walk your child into the building to sign them in.

Parents, Please remember if your student is arriving late to school from a doctor's appointment, they will need to show a note from the doctor for this to count as an excused tardy, otherwise it will be marked as an unexcused tardy.

It is important to have kids in class and ready to go. Classes begin at 8:00am for MS and 8:15am for Elementary and having students arrive to class tardy is a distraction that can easily be avoided.

A reminder from the handbook:

Students who accumulate five or more tardies in a month will lose dress of choice privileges.

Thank you for making Aspen View Academy the best school!

Be Ready for Weather Delays/Closures

AVA will follow DCSD for school closures and delays. In the event of a closure or delay, the information will be immediately posted on DCSD’s weather delays and closures page as well as on the AVA website. DCSD will also notify local media outlets of any closures or delays. Broadcasts are usually made by 6 am and periodically thereafter until approximately 9 am.

In the event DCSD schools are closed, all other activities scheduled at AVA’s facilities will also be canceled.

If there is a 90-minute delay,

  • B.A.S.E will begin at 8am
  • Middle school will begin at 9:30
  • Elementary school will begin at 9:45

As always, on days where DCSD’s Snow Team is activated and a delay or closure is not implemented, we respect the decision of our parents to keep their child home, if necessary. Please call the attendance line and this will be an excused absence.

PTO will be hosting a Warm Feet for Warriors sock drive October 30th-November 10th in partnership with Soldiers Angels. Adult socks are needed in all sizes and colors. These socks will be donated to active duty service members in care packages (they do not have to be uniform official) and to veteran hospitals in care packages (must be non-skid). You can learn more here. Socks can be dropped off in the Warm Feet for Warriors collection box in the lobby any time 10/30-11/10.

What is the Birthday Book Club?

Birthday Book Club invites families to recognize their child’s birthday by donating a book to the school library. Each donation is recognized by placing a bookplate with the child’s name on the front endpaper of the new book.

Staff Spotlight

This group makes up our 7th Grade Team. Middle School is an exciting and challenging time for our kids as they navigate the awkward transition of being a small kid, to being a big kid. These people work to lead their students through this time, challenging them to grow as individuals, teaching them not just curriculum, but study habits and work ethic, all while showing them grace.

Taylor Urzendowski (7th Grade History Teacher) is energetic, empathetic, detailed and challenges her students. Miss U loves hiking with her puppy and cheering on the Chiefs. She loves getting to witness students' curiosity, creativity, and growth firsthand.

Ben Fanning (7th Grade Para) is steady, calm, and never says no to helping others. He loves to watch movies and is working hard to complete a Masters Degree. Mr. Fanning shows up to improve the kids' lives each day.

Rich Barrett (7th Grade Math Teacher) is thoughtful, structured and passionate. Mr. Barrett enjoys camping, sporting events, puzzles, and traveling. He models "failing to succeed" in his classroom in order for your students to grow as learners.

Gulliver Branson (7th Grade English Teacher) is quick-witted, even and upbeat. He loves spending time with family and enjoying Colorado. Mr. Branson's passion is teaching students to become better and more passionate readers and writers.

Stephanie Rotherham (7th Grade Para) is sweet, hardworking and understanding. Mrs. Rotherham spends her time reading, hiking, camping and traveling with her family. She loves working with middle schoolers and has a true flare for it.

Jennifer Bohnsack (7th Grade Science Teacher) is enthusiastic, energetic and endearing. She loves to cook and be with her kids. Mrs. Bohnsack loves sharing her joy of science with her students and helping them learn new concepts

5:00-9:00pm

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th or 6th grade--a student's final year of elementary school (November).

5th/6th Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 5th Grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of November 6th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Gifted Identification Referral Testing

  • If your child is in grades 3, 4, or 5 and you believe they need evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.
  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked HERE
  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.
