Snow Days and Delayed Starts at Aspen View Academy
We’ve officially reached that time of year when snow becomes a real possibility here in Colorado! I am surprised and thankful that we have not had any snow yet. As we all know, forecasting snow in Colorado is not an exact science — we’re often surprised by just how much (or how little) snow actually falls compared to the forecast.
One of the most exciting moments for students — and let’s be honest, for staff too — is the anticipation of a possible snow day. While it’s never easy to predict whether there will be enough snow to cancel or delay school, it’s important to know how you can find accurate information about Aspen View Academy’s schedule on inclement weather days.
AVA follows the Douglas County School District (DCSD) when it comes to weather-related closures or delays. If DCSD announces that schools are closed, AVA will also be closed. This includes the cancellation of all activities scheduled for that day — such as BASE, athletics, and after-school clubs.
If the weather does not warrant a full closure but still presents safety concerns, DCSD may issue a delayed start. In that case, AVA’s schedule will be adjusted as follows:
-
Middle School: Begins at 9:30 a.m.
- Elementary and Pre-K: Begin at 9:45 a.m.
- Carpool drop-off: Begins at 9:15 a.m.
- BASE: Opens at 8:00 a.m.
Please do not drop off your child before 8:00 a.m., as staff will not be available to supervise students before that time.
For updates on school closures or delays, you can:
- Watch local TV news channels
-
Call the DCSD weather line at 303-387-SNOW (7669)
- Check your email — AVA will send out an email blast with closure or delay information
We also recognize that families make individual decisions about road safety. If you feel the conditions are unsafe to travel, you always have the option to keep your child home, even if school remains open. In that case, the absence will be excused.
For additional information about AVA’s weather policies, please visit our website or click here.
Stay warm, stay safe, and here’s hoping for just the right amount of snow this season!

The Yearbook committee is very grateful to those who have already submitted pictures. However, we have not received very many pictures to date. While our student team is working hard to take pictures, they are only allotted one period every other day to do so. This leaves many gaps in the fun events that take place throughout the school day and beyond here at AVA. Therefore, WE WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE more photos! The link to submit is below, or you can email them to me directly at alink@aspenviewacademy.org
Mark our Yearbook Great! Submit your photos here!!
Thank you, Mrs. Link and the Student Yearbook Team

We are reaching out to all families with students who have Peanut and Tree Nut allergies to let you know that Nutrition Services will start serving the Uncrustable Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich at lunch time in our elementary and charter schools.
We’re adding these sandwiches to help meet the needs of all students. PB&J sandwiches are a quick, nutritious, and familiar option for students that also help us reduce food waste.
Please know that student safety remains our top priority. The Uncrustable sandwich is a packaged product, which helps reduce cross contact from the Peanut Butter with other products in the kitchen. All of our kitchen managers also go through Allergy Training with the Registered Dietitian each year. We are mindful of food allergies and follow strict safety procedures, including offering Peanut-free seating areas when needed and taking extra precautions during preparation and service to prevent cross-contact.
If you would like your students’ allergies entered into our Point of Sale System, then the attached Meal Modification form will need to be completed by a doctor or Registered Dietitian and a parent/guardian, then sent back to Nutrition Services.
We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to provide healthy, appealing, and accessible meals for all students. If your child has a peanut allergy or you have concerns, please let us know so we can work together on a safe alternative.
Please reach out to Amy Faricy, Manager of Menu Services or Tara Gonzales, Registered Dietitian, Menu Support with any questions or concerns.

PreK News
Time is running out to add your future PreK student to the waiting list for the 2026-27 school year. In order to attend PreK your student must be 4 years old before October 1st of the school year they are attending and must be fully potty trained. The waiting list for the school year 2026-27 is filling up.
Current AVA families do have priority for spots but they are also based on the date stamp. The final day to add your PreK student's name to the list for school year 2026-27 is November 30th.
PreK is a full day program 8:00 am-3:30 pm. More info can be found on our website. PreK students are eligible for aftercare BASE. Please reach out to Debi Stalker if you have any questions.

Counseling Corner- November
A new month means a new SEL lesson for grades K-5. For the month of November the counseling team will be talking to all grade levels about using coloring, drawing, and journaling as a coping skill. The SEL lessons will focus on the following topics:
Kinder-2
Kindergarten will continue with the Zones of Regulation with a review of the zones in addition to learning various coping strategies to use to help get back to the green zone.
Grades 1 & 2
This month these students will learn the word resiliency, what it means, and how to handle problems with resiliency by working through various relatable scenarios.
Grades 3-5
We will continue our Bullying series with the book: Tough which looks at bullying from the bullies perspective. Last month the book: Weird was from the perspective of the student getting bullied. The books are the same story sequence giving different perspectives. The students are doing an amazing job sharing their insights about the stories.
As always, to promote learning and reinforcement, feel free to ask your student(s) about the zones, coping strategies, and bullying. Students really enjoy teaching and sharing with parents what they learned.
Have a wonderful November!
The Counseling Team

Volunteer Hours = Family Volunteer Appreciation Event
Aspen View Academy strongly encourages all families to perform 30 approved hours (15 hours for single parents) of volunteer service. It's a fantastic way to support your students and get to know other parents, as well as the AVA staff.
All AVA families who have completed 10 service hours by December 12th or (5 hours for single parents) will be invited to a family volunteer appreciation event hosted by the PTO held in January. More information on this fun event will be coming in early December.
We will also be having a fun family night at the end of the school year for those families who have met their hours for the school year.
| | Our volunteers logged 608 hours in the month of October. Thank you to all of our volunteers! Every month we will be doing a monthly drawing for our volunteers to win a gift card. Please remember to log your hours through Help Counter. Our volunteer of the month is Angelina Mandl Please stop by the front office to pick up your gift card. | | |

Join the Aspen View Academy School Accountability Committee (SAC)!
Are you looking for a meaningful way to contribute to our school with a minimal time commitment? Consider joining our School Accountability Committee (SAC)! By serving on the SAC, you can earn double the volunteer hours for your time spent on SAC-related activities.
We’re seeking parent representatives who reflect the diverse and vibrant community of Aspen View Academy. Your voice matters, and we’d love to have you on board!
As a SAC member, you’ll:
- Attend quarterly SAC meetings, which are scheduled for Wednesdays at 4:00 pm. Meetings may occur more frequently if needed.
- Represent and advocate for our school community.
If you’re interested in joining the SAC or have any questions, please contact Jessica Shepler at jessicashepler13@gmail.com. Our next meeting is Tuesday, December 2nd at 4:00 pm.
Why SAC Matters:
All schools in Colorado are required to have a School Accountability Committee. The SAC’s role is to engage parents and community members in the planning and evaluation of our school’s instructional programs and quality improvement efforts. Your participation helps us ensure the best possible outcomes for our students.
We look forward to hearing from you and working together to enhance our school community.

🎨 ORIGINAL WORKS ART FUNDRAISER COMING SOON! 🎨
We’re excited to announce that we will be partnering with Original Works this fall — the original art-based fundraising company!
Students will create artwork at school, and you’ll have the opportunity to order your child’s art reproduced on a variety of keepsake products ranging from mugs to magnets. Ordering will be done online in late October/early November, and products will arrive at school in early December—just in time for the holidays!
The products make great holiday and birthday gifts for family members, as well as wonderful keepsakes for students. Best of all, our school earns a profit from every order placed! Complete ordering details will be sent home soon.
✨ In addition to Original Works, we will also be participating in Artsonia, an ongoing fundraiser that runs all year long. Artsonia allows families to order products featuring their child’s artwork from any project completed throughout the school year.
Thank you for supporting these creative programs that celebrate our students’ hard work and imagination!
