With Halloween approaching and daylight hours growing shorter, we need to focus on keeping our students safe on their way to and from school. Now more than ever, all pedestrians and drivers must be mindful of the rules of the road.

Fatalities among young pedestrians most often occur during after-school hours. By reviewing and following these essential guidelines, we can ensure a safe season for our community.

Safety Tips for All Walkers

  1. Stop, Look, and Listen: Teach children the routine: Stop at the curb, Look Left, Right, and Left again before crossing, and continue looking until safely across.
  2. Use Crosswalks: Always cross streets at designated crosswalks or intersections. Look for cars in all directions, including those turning left or right. Make eye contact with drivers before stepping out. Never assume a car sees you!
  3. Ditch the Distractions: Put away cell phones, headphones, and other electronic devices when walking. You need your eyes and your ears to navigate safely.
  4. Be Visible: If there is no sidewalk, always walk facing traffic and as far away from the road as possible. As evenings get darker, wear bright colors or reflective gear to make yourself easier for drivers to spot.
  5. Walk, Don't Run: Never run, chase a ball, or dart out into the street. Be extra cautious of cars entering or exiting driveways and cars backing up in parking lots.

A Note to Parents and Guardians

Please be a good role model by following these rules.

  • Supervise: All children under the age of 10 should cross the street with an adult.
  • Drive Distraction-Free: When driving, especially in school zones, slow down, be patient, and eliminate all distractions (phones, etc.) to focus solely on the road and surrounding children.

Your attention to these details is the most important factor in keeping our streets safe.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th grade (November).

5th Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 5th grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of November 3, 2025. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Gifted Identification Referral Testing

  • If your child is in grades 3 and 4, and you believe they need evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.
  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked HERE.
  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.

After School Clubs for Q2 will start the week of November 3rd. Watch for an email early next week for a list of all the clubs that will be available for Q2 and to register. All after school club registration will occur in My School Bucks.

🎨 ORIGINAL WORKS ART FUNDRAISER COMING SOON! 🎨

We’re excited to announce that we will be partnering with Original Works this fall — the original art-based fundraising company!

Students will create artwork at school, and you’ll have the opportunity to order your child’s art reproduced on a variety of keepsake products ranging from mugs to magnets. Ordering will be done online in late October/early November, and products will arrive at school in early December—just in time for the holidays!

The products make great holiday and birthday gifts for family members, as well as wonderful keepsakes for students. Best of all, our school earns a profit from every order placed! Complete ordering details will be sent home soon.

✨ In addition to Original Works, we will also be participating in Artsonia, an ongoing fundraiser that runs all year long. Artsonia allows families to order products featuring their child’s artwork from any project completed throughout the school year.

Thank you for supporting these creative programs that celebrate our students’ hard work and imagination!

Mrs. Gallagher - Elementary Art Teacher

We all know that the season is starting to get cold and leaves are falling off of trees. There are many people across Colorado that struggle with getting clothes for the different seasons, especially during colder weather. This is where we come in; we want to help get them warm accessories and clothing items. We will be collecting gloves, new socks, and beanies in your classes. This will be a challenge; whoever gets the most donations will win a hot chocolate party. The dates for this event is for the whole school and will be October 20 - 31st. With your help we can improve so many lives this winter season. We wish you luck and hope you have a great holiday season!

Sincerely,

National Junior Honor Society

Mark Your Calendars!

CMAS dates for this year are here!  CMAS (Colorado Measures of Academic Success) is given to all students in grades 3-8.  These tests are so important to a school, as they let us know how we’re doing.  We use the information from the results of these tests to help us create the best learning opportunities for your children.  These results also influence AVA’s reputation in the eyes of the community at large.

Please review the linked document here for when AVA will be administering testing.  We ask that you are mindful of these dates and your child’s attendance during this time as you schedule trips and appointments.  Your student works hard all year, and these are the Championships where they can show off what they’ve learned.  Give them the chance to shine!  Thanks for your support of Aspen View Academy!
