Admin Address

Grades 3-5 are considered upper elementary grades. These are the years when students are beginning the transition from lower elementary to their middle school years. It is a wonderful age because they are beginning to get to know themselves more. Aspen View Academy has the best educators to support students as they learn and develop during these years.

Third graders are becoming more independent, they know what is fair and not fair, they are yearning to learn more, and want to show their funny sides. Fourth graders care deeply about school and what happens in the classroom and with their friends. They love to show what they know and explain their thoughts in great detail. Fifth graders are unique in that they are not so young anymore but they are not quite middle schoolers yet. It is fun to see them grow into their own person.

As the 3rd-5th Grade Assistant Principal, I love being able to have a first hand look and see the transformations going on all around me on a daily basis. I see changes and growth in their learning experiences and in the way they work and play together both in and out the classroom. New friendships are formed along with keeping their current friends. I also love to see how the students light up with each new learning experience. Third graders had the opportunity to have Zoo Educators, from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, come to AVA for an in house field trip where they learned more about animals and their habitats. The Fourth graders have been to the Museum of Nature and Science for a field trip to learn more about body systems. While there, they were able to dissect a sheep's lung. Fifth graders have been learning about plants and plant life. They will be going to the Downtown Aquarium to enhance their learning.

As you can see 3rd through 5th grade years are pivotal and transforming as our students change and grow from the elementary ages to the middle school ages. It is awe inspiring to watch this transformation happen with our wonderful students as they are guided, challenged, and educated by our fantastic teachers and staff at Aspen View Academy. We are so glad and appreciative that you trust us enough to have your children come to AVA.

Be Ready for Weather Delays/Closures

AVA will follow DCSD for school closures and delays. In the event of a closure or delay, the information will be immediately posted on DCSD’s weather delays and closures page as well as on the AVA website. DCSD will also notify local media outlets of any closures or delays. Broadcasts are usually made by 6 am and periodically thereafter until approximately 9 am.

In the event DCSD schools are closed, all other activities scheduled at AVA’s facilities will also be canceled.

If there is a 90-minute delay,

  • B.A.S.E will begin at 8am
  • Middle school will begin at 9:30
  • Elementary school will begin at 9:45

As always, on days where DCSD’s Snow Team is activated and a delay or closure is not implemented, we respect the decision of our parents to keep their child home, if necessary. Please call your child's school and this will be an excused absence.

PTO will be hosting a Warm Feet for Warriors sock drive October 30th-November 10th in partnership with Soldiers Angels. Adult socks are needed in all sizes and colors. These socks will be donated to active duty service members in care packages (they do not have to be uniform official) and to veteran hospitals in care packages (must be non-skid). Staff Spotlight

This group of ladies make up our 4th grade team. Together they don't just teach your kids, but also work to coach healthy peer relationships, give comfort to kids having bad days, and make sure students have all the tools to help them be successful.

Hayli Bauman (4th Grade Paraprofessional) is kind and fun-loving, which makes her great at relating to her students. When Miss Bauman isn't at school, she loves to create art. She works to help support the teachers, but also your students in small groups and to meet their individual needs.

Karen Davis (4th Grade Teacher) can be described as compassionate, genuine and patient. Outside of school she likes reading, walking her dog and meeting friends for coffee. Mrs. Davis enjoys creating a learning environment that kids will love to learn in, and watching things "click" for her students.

Melissa Doyle (4th Grade Teacher) is creative, fun and a ray of sunshine. Mrs. Doyle enjoys creating on her cricut, baking, photography, and hanging out with family and friends. She loves finding what makes each child unique, and using that to build relationships and make them smile.

Emily Lipnick (4th Grade Teacher) is caring, hardworking and organized. She loves hiking, reading and watching movies when she isn't teaching your children. Mrs. Lipnick loves watching students grow academically and personally as they learn skills they will need to be successful.

Marlee Valitutti's (4th Grade Paraprofessional) team described her as funny, supportive and reliable. When she isn't here at school, you can find her hiking, spending time in the mountains with family and running her kids around town for sports. "Mrs. V" loves helping her students believe in themselves when she's getting to know them individually or working with them in smaller settings.

Debra Markert (4th Grade Teacher) is thoughtful, kind-hearted and caring. Mrs. Markert loves to spend time outdoors- hiking, jet skiing, swimming, walking, gardening, visiting with family and friends. She loves making learning fun through activities, like special projects and field trips.

When she isn't at school, she helps over see a local food pantry, she runs, loves being outdoors and cheering for her kids in their sports. Mrs. Bennett loves with the students and helping them through their day. She helps them turn bad days around through dance parties, high fives and joking with them.

Families and veterans are welcome to attend both assemblies.

Saturday, October 28th

5:00-9:00pm

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February) and 5th or 6th grade--a student's final year of elementary school (November).

5th/6th Grade Universal Screen

As part of this process, ALL students in 5th Grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of November 6th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Gifted Identification Referral Testing

  • If your child is in grades 3, 4, or 5 and you believe they need evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification.
  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked HERE
  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.
