A Message From The Principal

Living by Example
One of the great joys of being here at AVA is being able to see the acts of kindness, politeness and respect our students readily engage in without the expectation of being seen or rewarded. When kindergarteners use, “please” and “thank you” when asking for help, or first and second graders walk with a friend to class who is struggling in the morning, our community is proud of these youngsters. When third and fourth graders include a new student at recess or fifth and sixth graders help a friend clean up a spill in the cafeteria, we see glimpses of the adults our students are growing into. When seventh and eighth graders listen respectfully to a peer’s point of view that is different from their own, we realize what a special school and community that we are a part of.
How do our students learn this? One of the ways students learn to act in these ways is from the behaviors they see modeled around them. We hear the term “lead by example,” but it is even more than just leading by example, our students are fortunate to be surrounded by adults who live by example. So many AVA teachers, staff members, community members, and parents model kindness, respect, grace, manners, selflessness, work ethic, civility, and so much more in their everyday interactions from sun-up to sun-down.
Even when surrounded by so many examples of people living by example, there is also a reality that to have a true influence over another, that person has to desire to follow the example. A student has to want to be mentored and want to be like the adults he/she interacts with. In our Capturing Kids Hearts program that is one of the tenets of AVA, this is why we start first and foremost with the heart. It is only when we have a student’s heart that we can then move on to the head, the mentoring, and eventually the forming of habits.
If we as adults want to influence student lives, before we think to model the kinds of behaviors we want others to follow, we must first model how we care about those around us and inspire them to care about each other. We thank all of the teachers, staff and parents that make up our AVA community for the many ways we lead and live by example. We thank you for modeling civility and heart, even in contentious times. And, we thank you for all you do in daily remembrances to interact with all members of our AVA family with kindness and respect. That example is what leads to the countless ways students replicate those examples.
I am so grateful to be a part of this community and thank you all everyday for all of the ways that I am fortunate to serve alongside all of you.

Welcome to another school year at Aspen View Academy. We have a lot of volunteer opportunities so keep a look out for Sign-up Genius', Newsletter announcements and emails from the PTO. Below is an excerpt from the AVA Handbook.
VOLUNTEERING COMMITMENT – AVA believes that the success of each student will be a shared responsibility of students, teachers, parents, staff, and community leaders. Volunteers enhance the school and its culture and character through their involvement. Accordingly, a strong family involvement program will be implemented. AVA expects 30 volunteer hours per family per school year. Single-parent families are expected to volunteer 15 hours per school year. The volunteer school year shall coincide with AVA’s fiscal year, and hours shall accrue from July 1 through June 30. If your family has special circumstances that make it difficult for you to meet the expected volunteer hours, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator. Many volunteer opportunities exist within AVA’s PTO. The PTO is an organization comprised of parent volunteers for the purpose of providing community support, fundraising and planning various events within our school community.
Pre-registration is required prior to volunteering. Please visit the Raptor Volunteer site, as this only needs to be completed one time. Once completed we will need you to bring your ID in to scan and link to your profile.
These volunteer opportunities can also be found on the volunteer page of our website.
