Capturing Kids’ Hearts is an important program we implement at AVA. Our goal is to capture students’ hearts to teach their minds to train their hands to form their habits. So, what does it mean to train their hands? It comes back to the idea that we learn by doing. As the saying goes, “I hear, and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” (Confucius). I’m sure many of us can think of an example in our lives where we truly learned better by doing. Many of us can relate to how involving students in learning provides for a deeper level of understanding. Hearing the excitement when walking into classrooms where students are bringing in recycled materials to build something of their own or checking on the chick eggs that are hatching brings a level of experience that can’t be matched through explanations alone. When we give students the tools to delve into learning by doing and to help them make the learning their own, we get to hear the pride in their voice as they show off the products of their learning. One of my favorite things to do is to be at the door greeting students on days when projects are due. As students file through the doors with their projects proudly on display, I love hearing them beam with pride while exclaiming, “I made this.” Their space projects, or insect projects, or layers of the Earth projects are the products that show the students have owned the learning, especially as they stop and explain details of their projects and what they have learned. When the learning comes alive as students are involved and excited is a big part of what it means to train students’ hands, and this is such an important part of AVA and community that we are.

Volunteer Corner

Welcome to another school year at Aspen View. We have a lot of volunteer opportunities so keep a look out for Sign-up Genius', Newsletter announcements and emails from the PTO. Below is an excerpt from the AVA Handbook.

VOLUNTEERING COMMITMENT – AVA believes that the success of each student will be a shared responsibility of students, teachers, parents, staff, and community leaders. Volunteers enhance the school and its culture and character through their involvement. Accordingly, a strong family involvement program will be implemented. AVA expects 30 volunteer hours per family per school year. Single-parent families are expected to volunteer 15 hours per school year. The volunteer school year shall coincide with AVA’s fiscal year, and hours shall accrue from July 1 through June 30. If your family has special circumstances that make it difficult for you to meet the expected volunteer hours, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator. Many volunteer opportunities exist within AVA’s PTO. The PTO is an organization comprised of parent volunteers for the purpose of providing community support, fundraising and planning various events within our school community.

Preregistration on the Raptor Volunteer site is required, this only needs to be completed one time.

To log volunteer hours, please visit the Volunteer Portal.

These volunteer opportunities can also be found on the volunteer page of our website.
