A Message from our Board
Dear Parents, Students, Faculty, Staff, and all others of the AVA Family,

As we end the 2021-2022 school year, we often take time to reflect on the accomplishments and trials of the past year. There have been many special times this past year that we at AVA have been a part of and while there were some bumps along the way, we’ve grown as a school community in so many ways.

The school expansion that is taking place before our eyes provides many obstacles to overcome daily as parents, teachers, students, and administrators navigate the tighter spaces, noise, and constant distraction. The result will be an incredibly memorable middle school experience, with expanded opportunities throughout the school as we offer more programming and dedicated classroom space to the current and expanded curriculum. Parking and increased congestion during pickup and drop off have made things more difficult, but I believe the extra patience shown by our parents has been seen and replicated by our students.

This school year brought about more debate around what it means to be a charter school as the district and other entities pushed the limits on what policies they can set and enforce. We saw healthy debates at school board meetings early in the process and that is something that not every school can say occurred. While not everyone was happy with how we navigated these issues, the process of having opposing voices heard has shown that we all want what is best for our students. That gives me great confidence and pride in our AVA family and is why I believe charter schools are the best place for our children. Having a voice as parents, faculty members, staff, and even students, guides this school to the success that we’ve seen it become.

I would also like to thank all the candidates that ran for the school board this year. The turnout this year was amazing and is the largest turnout we have had since the early days of the school. I’d also like to take the time to thank our incredible teachers, staff, and admin for all the work they put in over the course of the year. There are many days when that work late, take work home, or deal with exceedingly difficult issues and I applaud them for all that they do.

Finally, I would like to give a very special thank you to our three board members that are leaving the board at the end of this school year: Julie Casten, Shari Allen, and Jonathan Nye. As a board member you put in a lot of time preparing for meetings, sitting on committees, and talking with administration and parents. These three have given a lot to this school. I would be remiss to not carve out Julie’s and Jonathan’s time on the board. As founding members, this school would not exist without these two individuals.
They will forever have a special place in the heartbeat of the AVA School!

On behalf of the AVA Board, thank you all and we’re looking forward to next year!

Eric Patton
AVA Board Member & Treasurer

IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION INFORMATION

Colorado law requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed child cares to be vaccinated against certain diseases, unless an exemption is filed. Below are the vaccines required for students attending Colorado licensed child cares and schools.

Vaccines required to enter school (K-12)
Hepatitis B.
Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTap).*
Inactivated poliovirus (IPV).*
 Measles, mumps, rubella (MMR).*
Varicella (chicken pox).*
Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap).**
*Students 4 through 6 years of age are required to have their final doses of DTaP, IPV, MMR and Varicella prior to kindergarten entry.
**Students are required to have Tdap prior to entry into 6th grade. One dose of Tdap is required for 6th through 12th grades.

If you choose not to have your student vaccinated according to the current recommended schedule because of personal or religious reasons, you must submit a Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption to AVA when school begins in August.

Nonmedical exemptions must be submitted annually, which means parents must submit the certificate every new school year. (The school year begins on July 1 and runs through June 30 of the following year.) There are two ways to file a nonmedical exemption:
File the Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption WITH a signature from an immunizing provider, OR
File the Certificate of Nonmedical Exemption received upon the completion of the online education module.

Downloadable certificates and the online education module are available at

Volunteer Corner
Welcome to another school year at Aspen View Academy. We have a lot of volunteer opportunities so keep a look out for Sign-up Genius', Newsletter announcements and emails from the PTO. Below is an excerpt from the AVA Handbook.

VOLUNTEERING COMMITMENT – AVA believes that the success of each student will be a shared responsibility of students, teachers, parents, staff, and community leaders. Volunteers enhance the school and its culture and character through their involvement. Accordingly, a strong family involvement program will be implemented. AVA expects 30 volunteer hours per family per school year. Single-parent families are expected to volunteer 15 hours per school year. The volunteer school year shall coincide with AVA’s fiscal year, and hours shall accrue from July 1 through June 30. If your family has special circumstances that make it difficult for you to meet the expected volunteer hours, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator. Many volunteer opportunities exist within AVA’s PTO. The PTO is an organization comprised of parent volunteers for the purpose of providing community support, fundraising and planning various events within our school community.

Pre-registration is required prior to volunteering. Please visit the Raptor Volunteer site, as this only needs to be completed one time. Once completed we will need you to bring your ID in to scan and link to your profile.

To log volunteer hours, please visit the Volunteer Portal.

These volunteer opportunities can also be found on the volunteer page of our website.
