Reflecting on Principal Barber’s message last week about Charter Schools, two themes resonated with me throughout his article – Choice and Freedom. These two underlying principals are at the core of why any Charter School, including Aspen View, was originally started. When it comes to our kid’s education, the expectation of choice and freedom are as important today as they were 11 years ago when 6 parents got together to start our school. Many of us would agree that at one point or another we have taken the choices and freedoms we all experience for granted. Not just what we have here at Aspen View but stepping back and looking at the choices and freedoms we have as Americans. It may sound cliché, but it seems to be more true than ever, with choice and freedom comes responsibility. Responsibility can mean many things, but to me it means getting involved and being keenly aware of those that represent my interests, such as appointed and elected officials. If the last 24 months have taught me anything it has pointed out that the people we entrust with our choices and freedoms really do matter. This is true at the National, State and Local levels and true right here at Aspen View.
In the next month, you will begin seeing communication about an upcoming election for an open board position along with the need to appoint two other board members. Why is this important? Because the Board of a Charter School really matters. It is in all of our best interests to ensure the continued success of Aspen View and that the next 11 years are the best yet to come. Most importantly, we want to ensure that Aspen View remains a school dedicated to parent choice and freedom when it comes to our kid’s education. This is where You come in. At a minimum, make sure you are fulfilling your volunteer commitment to the school. Beyond volunteering, if you can say Yes to the following questions, you would be an ideal Board Member.
-
Are you a parent of a current student at Aspen View Academy?
-
Are you passionate about having a choice in your kid’s education?
- Will you commit to partnering with the Administration to ensure Aspen View can continue to fulfill its Mission & Vision?
-
Do you take a collaborative and inclusive approach when presented with challenges and new opportunities?
-
Do you have a spirit of entrepreneurialism and intellectual curiosity?
If any of this resonates with you, I, or any other member of the board, would love to meet with you. Remember not to take what we have for granted. Get involved and be willing to invest some of your time and talent to ensure that Aspen View remains a school dedicated to parent choice and freedom for many more years to come.
