Board Meeting Notes
  • AVA’s Spring Fundraising Dinner and Auction is February 7 at Maggiano’s; grab your tickets now!! Tickets available here.
  • The Douglas County Commissioners approved a significant portion of AVA’s safety grant request, totaling nearly $120,000. One major approval item was the purchase and installation of a fence between the school and park!
  • The Building Committee continues to make great strides with reviewing building expansions plans while the Finance Committee is deep in exploring financing options. Preliminary general contractor evaluations will take place on 1/23/20. Stay tuned for more news as it becomes available.
  • And last but not least…..the board unanimously voted to renew Principal Barber’s employment agreement for 2020-2021 school year, and thanked Mr. Barber for his continued commitment to Innovation, Excellence & Wisdom at AVA!
Middle School News
The Middle School is hosting its first-ever Health Expo on Thursday and Friday, January 30th and 31st during 8th period. This event is open to anyone, but mostly geared toward the Middle School Students and will consist of 5 booths and interactive, hands-on lessons and demonstrations on the topics of: Physical Wellness, Healthy Eating, Emotional/Mental Health Wellness, Screentime Wellness, and Healthy Study Habits & Organization.

The Expo will be put on by our Middle School Senators and we are coordinating our efforts with our AVA Staff, DCSD Nutrition Services, DCSD Healthy Schools Coordinators, DCSD Prevention Relations Department, the Tri-County Health Department, and more. We are very excited to host this event and are looking for any parent volunteers to help set up the booths in the gym, donate materials, or give your time to help out on those afternoons. REMINDER

We do not have school on Monday, January 20th in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Enjoy your day off.
Tomorrow is Spirit Day

Students may wear any AVA shirt (shirt purchased from the Wolfshack, Landsharks, Fun Run, etc). Students MUST wear uniform bottoms.

On Thursday January 23rd we will be doing class photos. Please click here to order class photos. If your student missed both photo days that have already taken place, please email Donia Garcia so that we can get them photographed and into the yearbook.

Visitor parking is now on the west side of the building (the small lot past the PreK playground). If you are just stopping by quickly (early pick up/drop off, dropping something off for your student, etc), you are welcome to park your car along the curb in front of the school (where carpool takes place). Please do not park in the staff parking in front of the building as these are assigned parking spots. Thank you
Mark Your Calendars! 

The Middle School Musical Theater Elective will perform Roald Dahl's Willy Wonka Jr. on Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00 PM in the AVA gym. There are no tickets or admission fee necessary to see the show, just show up! Come support our students and their endeavors in the performing arts! Hope to see you there!
Pay to Dress of Choice January 29th - Milestones for Maxwell 

Pay to Dress of Choice will be on January 29th. The charity randomly chosen and approved by the Board is called Milestones for Maxwell. Funds raised will help research and support advanced gene therapy for the neurological disease, SLC6A1. Read more here. You can participate in the pay to dress of choice for $1 minimum. 
Important Information: Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) - 2nd Grade Universal Screening

Universal Screening 
Based on feedback from families and the Colorado Department of Education, we are making improvements to our Universal Screening process. Beginning the spring of 2020, DCSD will transition from the “paper pencil” CogAT to the online version. The online assessment platform provides for easier administration, faster results, and access to the directions in multiple languages other than English. (NOTE: Language options for the Spring 2020 Testing Window are in process.) In addition, we are changing our Universal Screening grade from 3rd grade to 2nd grade as recommended by state and national guidance. 
 
As part of this process, ALL students in Grade 2 will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT 8) this February 11th, 12th, and 13th. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.  

If your child is in 2nd grade and took the CogAT in September of 2019, you have the option to opt your child out of this testing window. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Last week we kicked off our Kids Heart Challenge and your student(s) has probably told you all about the Heart Heroes and their healthy messages! We sent home envelopes explaining the program and how your student(s) can participate if they so choose. There are several ways to participate, including through our website and APP. You and your child(ren) can take healthy pledges and help raise donations to support heart health research through The American Heart Association!
 
There are so many ways to participate that we created some videos to help you understand it all! Watch “ How To Register Online” to find the easiest way to participate – and INSTANTLY earn a FREE wristband!!

Papa John’s Spirit Night January 30th  

Papa John’s and Aspen View Academy PTO have teamed up to help raise money. 20% of your order will be donated to AVA! The flyer will come home in future Thursday folders and must be turned in with order. You can also purchase Papa John’s gift cards in the Wolf Shack.

Volunteer Hours for Fundraising purchases: Did you recently purchase King Soopers Community Rewards or Amazon Smile and mention AVA as your charity? If so, you can submit an hour of volunteering on Raptor and enter it as “fundraising” and add the retailer name in notes. Thanks! 
Spring Fundraiser in February - Dinner and Auction! 

Save the date for the spring fundraiser which will take place on February 7th, from 7-10pm at Maggiano’s in Englewood. As a school community, we have raised just over $42,500 so far, and we’d love to reach our $60,000 goal at the dinner and auction. Funds this year will be going towards outdoor improvements. If you want to help by providing auction items, experiences, or trips, please check out this sign-up genius.

Morning Carpool Reminders 

Morning carpool is from 7:45am – 8:10am

We are seeing an increase in the number of tardy students in the morning. As a reminder, the morning drop-off begins at 7:45am (5 minutes earlier than last year) and continues to 8:10am. If your child arrives in the building after 8:12am they will be marked tardy.  

We added the extra 5 minute drop-off window to accommodate the increase in student enrollment. We have, however, noticed very few cars arriving on the property between 7:45am and 7:55am. Also, we have observed quite a few cars arriving on AVA property after 8:10am meaning your child will be tardy. School officially begins at 8:15am so it is important to have kids in class and ready to go. Classes begin at 8:15am and having students arrive to class tardy is a distraction that can easily be avoided.

Please follow these steps to sign up for middle school sports:

  1. Login to "myschoolbucks"
  2. Using the search icon in the upper right corner, search "program"
  3. Click the "Aspen View Academy" box on the left side of the screen. DO NOT click "athletics."
  4. Select your sport from the options
  5. Register
