Nearly nine years ago Aspen View Academy opened its doors to the Castle Rock community. There was a lot of excitement with many firsts for the school’s students and staff. First day of school, first field trip, or first end of year celebration. A lot of these firsts centered around building a positive climate and culture for everyone that entered the building. Along the way there were things that worked and some that didn’t. One of the things that has been staple of the school has been the R.E.S.P.E.C.T model. Each letter represents a characteristic that is valued at Aspen View. My focus is going to be on the “C” which represents compassion.

Compassion is not just the ability to understand how someone feels, but the ability to engage and help that person in their time of need. At Aspen View we teach our students to be compassionate to others inside the building as well as outside of it. Staff demonstrates this by being an active listener when students need help solving a problem. Our teachers have worked with students to come up with alternative activities and games for recess since we have temporarily lost the play equipment due to our expansion, this does include a dance party when necessary.

It is not only the staff that shows compassion, but our students do as well. Students have helped our substitute teachers find important materials so that they could do their job. They help their classmates clean up a mess because there was an accident. Students have held open doors for staff and visitors that would struggle without it. They check in on their friends to make sure that they are ok.

The R.E.S.P.E.C.T. model has been a part of the Aspen View culture since its inception. Each character trait is part of the bigger picture of nurturing our students to be the best that they can be as a person. Even though these are only a few of the examples of compassion that takes place at Aspen View, it shows the value that is placed on character at school. It gives us an understanding of how we should treat each other in all settings.

The Super Bowl is this Sunday!  In the spirit of extra fun, tomorrow, Friday, February 11, we will allow students and staff to wear their favorite sports team's jersey and they must wear their uniform bottoms. It does not have to be a football jersey, it can be any sport or any form of spirit wear. Have some fun and show off your favorite team.

If you are not participating in Spirit Wear, uniforms will be required.
Intent to Return to Aspen View Academy

Please take a moment to complete the Intent to Return form for every student currently enrolled at AVA. This helps us know how many new students we have openings for in the upcoming school year and reserves your spot (You do not need to do the DCSD Open Enrollment process if you are already enrolled in any K-7th grade at AVA).

This form must be filled out and submitted online by February 18th, 2022 to reserve your student's spot for the 2022 –23 school year. Please complete the form for every student returning to AVA next school year.

This form is specific to Aspen View Academy. If this form is not submitted by February 18th, 2022, AVA will assume you are not returning to AVA and your child's spot may be given to the next person on the lottery list.

PLEASE NOTE: OPEN ENROLLMENT AT ANOTHER SCHOOL OVERRIDES THIS INTENT TO RETURN.

Are you a parent with photography skills? Do you need some volunteer hours? AVA is looking for a photographer to take impromptu photos of students during a school day. We probably just need an hour or two of your time at the school, as well as the time to save and transfer the digital photos. If you are interested, please contact Holly Landauer (hlandauer@aspenviewacademy.org) to schedule a time. Thank you in advance!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

DCSD is committed to implementing equitable practices to increase access to advanced/gifted learning opportunities. Based on state and national recommendations and requirements, we implement Universal Screening for students in 2nd grade (February).

2nd Grade Universal Screen
As part of this process, ALL students in 2nd grade not identified for gifted programming will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) the week of February 14. This assessment indicates the level and pattern of cognitive development of a student in comparison to grade and age mates. These general reasoning abilities, which start developing at birth and continue through early adulthood, are influenced by experiences gained both in and out of school.

If your child is already identified for gifted programming, they will not participate in this universal screen testing. Your Gifted Education Facilitator will contact you directly with information about this process.

Kindergarten/ 1st Grade Gifted Identification Referral Testing
  • If your child is in K or 1st grade and you believe he/she needs evaluation for Gifted Identification and Services, you may refer your child for testing by initiating the Gifted Identification Process.
  • NOTE: Requesting this assessment automatically initiates the process to evaluate for Gifted Identification
  • Please request CogAT testing for your child by completing the Referral for Gifted Identification linked here
  • Upon receipt of this form the Gifted Education Facilitator will connect with you to discuss next steps in the gifted identification process.

If you have any questions please reach out to Kimberly Mayne at kmayne@aspenviewacademy.org

Volunteer Corner
Welcome to another school year at Aspen View Academy. We have a lot of volunteer opportunities so keep a look out for Sign-up Genius', Newsletter announcements and emails from the PTO. Below is an excerpt from the AVA Handbook.

VOLUNTEERING COMMITMENT – AVA believes that the success of each student will be a shared responsibility of students, teachers, parents, staff, and community leaders. Volunteers enhance the school and its culture and character through their involvement. Accordingly, a strong family involvement program will be implemented. AVA expects 30 volunteer hours per family per school year. Single-parent families are expected to volunteer 15 hours per school year. The volunteer school year shall coincide with AVA’s fiscal year, and hours shall accrue from July 1 through June 30. If your family has special circumstances that make it difficult for you to meet the expected volunteer hours, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator. Many volunteer opportunities exist within AVA’s PTO. The PTO is an organization comprised of parent volunteers for the purpose of providing community support, fundraising and planning various events within our school community.

Pre-registration is required prior to volunteering. Please visit the Raptor Volunteer site, as this only needs to be completed one time. Once completed we will need you to bring your ID in to scan and link to your profile.

To log volunteer hours, please visit the Volunteer Portal.

These volunteer opportunities can also be found on the volunteer page of our website.
