Conversations About School

When you think of parent involvement at AVA, do you envision moms and dads volunteering in the classroom, helping in the lunchroom or with carpool? Certainly, those are valuable ways to be involved, but research shows that supporting your child's education at home is extremely important as well. Following are four conversations that will help you stay involved with your child's education:

"Let's see what you brought home today."
Look at completed work whenever possible to see what your child is learning and how well they are doing. You could comment on their social studies work or their math progress. Make positive comments about their work and show that you are proud of them.

"Show me what you have for homework."
It is your child's job to do their homework, but you play a role too. Make sure your child knows what they are supposed to do by having them explain the assignments to you. After they finish, glance over the work to see that it is complete.

"Describe a book you enjoyed today."
This gives you an idea of what your child prefers to read. Then, build a daily reading habit by asking what they would like to read tonight. Encourage their reading and listening skills by reading aloud with them and letting them read to you.

"Tell me what you learned that you would like to know more about."
Use your child's interest as a jumping-off point for activities to share. If your child likes geometry, you might do tangrams together. If they are fascinated by a lesson they learned in science, talk more about it with them and look for ways to explore their interests.

Treats with Grandparents

Don’t forget to bring your grandparents to school at 7:15am on Friday, September 6th in the cafeteria for some quality time and treats! This will be the same time staff will be arriving to the school, so we ask that if at all possible, please park on the street rather than in the AVA parking lot, unless parking in the handicap spots (with placard).
The Ruekert Family is incredibly grateful for the support of Principal Barber, AVA’s PTO, and the AVA community. With your help, we were able to raise over $1,600 during last week’s Pay for Dress of Choice Day in support of the 4th Annual Colorado Walk & Roll to Cure FSHD! Your support is deeply appreciated by the Ruekert family and they can’t thank you all enough.

To learn more about this community fundraiser and FSH Muscular Dystrophy or if you are looking to walk with the Ruekert Family THIS SATURDAY, September 7th or make a direct tax deductible donation, please click on the link provided: Team Ruekert Warriors

Annual AVA Fun Run on 9/25

This just in, all proceeds from Wolf Run will go to updating our outdoor space, including the multi-use area behind the modular classrooms. The plan is to use the space for dining, recreation, and even classroom space. We will also attempt to add some new recess equipment and supplies. This year’s goal is to raise over $60,000 through this fundraiser. We’ll kick off with a Pep Rally on September 16th. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (average is around 25-30 laps) at the Wolf Run, which will happen on September 25th. Families are welcome to attend to cheer on their runners! More information to follow in this week’s Thursday folders!
