Small Business Season:

16 Questions to Plan for Success

Do you find yourself wondering how you’re going to compete with larger, national stores with big marketing budgets and attractive loss leaders that bring in a crowd? How will you capture the attention of local shoppers, dinner, or service users? Well, we’re here to equip you with a set of insightful questions to ask yourself, your employees, and your customers for big returns this holiday. By embracing these questions, you will not only position your business for the holiday rush (and revenue!) but also foster a stronger connection with your local audience. Read our blog post for more.

9 Tips for Instagrammable Season

Creating an Instagrammable holiday display can be a game-changer for your business. According to the Wall Street Journal, sales could increase as much as 40% for stores that are welcoming and encourage relaxation and invitations to “stay a while.” Holiday decorations and photo ops are great ways to do this.

Read this blog post to see how you can create captivating photo ops and over-the-top displays that will inspire word-of-mouth marketing and make your small business shine this holiday season.

Join us as we celebrate Small Business Season, a feel-good celebration of our community’s entrepreneurial spirit.

Be Part of a Holiday Tradition

Since 2019 more than 75,000 people have seen the chamber's “Elf on the Shelf ” shop local campaign on Facebook. A member of our chamber staff, dressed in official Elf on the Shelf regalia, visits member businesses to showcase gift items and ideas. Photos like the one here accompanied short articles about the featured items, and we released them one each day leading up to Christmas with tremendous response.

This year, we'll be cross posting to our chamber Instagram account, too. We’re limiting the number of participants to 20 businesses in order to focus attention and to make sure we can publish them all in plenty of time for people to shop. It’s first-come first-served, limited to chamber members and the cost is just $50 to participate. Your payment secures your place in line. Email David@oldoregon.com (by 5 p.m. Monday) and reference #ShopLocalElf for more information.

Customers can place their orders at the store or astoriacoop.square.site then pick them up on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22 for a festive gathering. The co-op deli is offering a traditional Thanksgiving turkey menu, a vegan gluten-free menu with a mushroom ballotine, as well as extra sides, pumpkin pie, Dutch apple pie and apple cake. Trail Action Plan Complete

Traversing Oregon’s dramatic coastline from border to border, the Oregon Coast Trail (OCT) travels roughly 400 miles across beaches, forests, and rivers. Much of the trail is on beach or on hiking trails. However, a significant portion of the OCT follows the shoulders of roads and highways, such as U.S. 101. These gaps in the OCT can feel uncomfortable or unsafe and detract from the hiking experience. Oregon Coast Trail Foundation gathered comments earlier this year from stakeholders, residents and trail users to create an action plan.

This Oregon Coast Trail Action Plan describes how to remedy these gaps in the trail. This plan also addresses ways to improve trail amenities and services along the trail, including mapping and wayfinding, camping, restrooms, water crossing services, and a centralized trail information system.

Take the Small Business Credit Survey

We were asked to please share the Federal Reserve’s Small Business Credit Survey with our region’s small business owners. They need about 10 more Oregon responses to this Small Business Survey to get state level data to compare at the national data. The survey closes tomorrow, November 17.

Log Exports Resume on Pier One

Since losing log exports in 2019, the Port of Astoria’s Pier One has been under-utilized. Though cruise vessel traffic has steadily increased since the pandemic and has become a major contributor to the local economy, cargo operations have ceased. It is with great pleasure that the Port of Astoria announces that on November 7th, the Port Commission approved a two-year lease agreement with Northwest Forest Link. NFL will take advantage of Astoria’s strategic location to bolster its log export business which will work well with existing cruise operations.

Cruise ships and other large vessels will continue docking on the north face of Pier One while NFL’s cargo loading operations will commence on the west side of Pier One – and provide cruise passengers a bird’s-eye view of log export operations. Read more here.

Oregon Coast King Tides Safety

King Tides are back! Each year, you can expect to see king tides in the winter months, this year's dates are:

  • November 25 - 27, 2023
  • December 13 - 15, 2023
  • December 25, 2023*
  • January 11 - 13, 2024
  • February 8 - 10, 2024

*Unusually high tide, but not a King Tide.

This is a good time to remind yourself, your staff and visitors about beach safety. The water can approach out of nowhere, a phenomenon known as sneaker waves. The US Coast Guard warns that sneaker waves are one of the largest weather threats to those on the beach.

The King Tides Project documents the effect that extreme tide events have on our state’s beaches, coastal waterways, private property, and public infrastructure. Photographs of these tides help to visualize and understand the impacts of sea level rise (like flooding and erosion).

CEDR Fall Update to the Business Community

Last week, Kevin Leahy, Executive Director of CEDR, shared an update to the Business Community on 2023 activities and results of CEDR, Clatsop SBDC & the Clatsop WORKS summer paid internship program.

This year, our team has also been given the responsibility for the Clatsop Community College Community Education & Workforce Training programs. All non-credit programs at CCC are now under Jessica Newhall and myself. We are very excited to build these important programs for the future, and will feature more results in my next

Northwest Oregon Economic Indicators

This month we are looking at Oregon veterans and how their unemployment rate compares with the rest of the state. In 2022, the unemployment rate for Oregon veterans was 3.6%, which was lower than the rate for nonveterans of 4.1%. Veterans also had a higher median income than non-veterans. If you’d like to learn more about key employment indicators for Oregon’s veteran population, check out this article on QualityInfo.org here.

If you have questions about this information or are interested in learning more about your local labor market or general economic trends - or to be added to this monthly email list - contact Shaun Barrick, Workforce Analyst/Economist.
