Small Business Season:

Harnessing the Power of FOMO

Fear of Missing Out, or FOMO, is a powerful sales motivator, and the holiday season is one of the best times to leverage that tactic for extraordinary revenue. Don't create false scarcity or pressure customers into buying something they don't need. You want to drive sales but not at the risk of the customer relationship. Visit our blog for some tips on how you can do just that.

Join us as we celebrate Small Business Season, a feel-good celebration of our community’s entrepreneurial spirit.

News From, About & For Fellow Members

Holiday Events and Changes to Hours

Our chamber visitor center staff and volunteers are being asked about your special plans for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve or New Year's Day. We refer to our community calendar first when looking up events and hope you find it to be a valuable resource, too.

Are you hosting special holiday activities? What are your seasonal hours of operation? Is your restaurant going to be open or offering a special menu on the holidays? Is your event on our community calendar?

You can post your activities on our online event calendar directly. Sign in to your member’s landing page at members.oldoregon.com/login or post using the public submission form on the calendar. You can also update your directory listing while you are logged in.

Call or email us at the chamber if you need help posting to the calendar or to let us know your seasonal plans.

Tranquil Holiday Offerings at Day Spa

The holidays are here at Tranquil River Day Spa. We will be serving your choice of complimentary hot beverage, plus snacks when you come into the spa for an appointment this month. When booking online, look for the seasonal holiday sessions category for our Tranquil Holiday Menu to choose your holiday soak, luxury footbath, wrap, hot stone massage and more.

Stop by the spa to purchase a gift certificate or pick something up from our gift shop to spread tranquility this season.

Raffle Benefits Animals in Need

Clatsop Animal Assistance’s Happy Tails Fundraiser, and contributions throughout the year, make it possible for CAA to provide help and hope for the homeless dogs and cats in Clatsop County. In addition to donating to the online fundraiser, you can help us reach our funding goals by coming out to the Happy Tails Holiday Party this weekend for pictures with Santa, raffles, silent auction (including a day with a bar pilot or a portrait of your pet), and our always popular bake sale.

Holiday Bus Route Changes

On Saturday, December 9, the Pacific Connector will make their final route northbound leaving Cannon Beach at 4:21 p.m. There is no SETD Bus Service on Monday, December 25, or January 1. The PACIFIC CONNECTOR will be on the regular weekend schedule on December 24th (Christmas Eve) and on December 31st ( New Year’s Eve). NW Point Bus will be on their regular daily schedule during the Holidays. More information at nwconnector.org or call SETD (503) 861-7433. Click here to print this holiday info.

LCHRMA Reps Attend National Event

Three of our board members attended the annual Volunteer Leader Business Meeting (VLBM) in Washington, DC, this month to learn how to better serve the HR profession on many levels. VLBM is the Society for Human Resources Management’s (SHRM) annual invite-only business meeting that serves as an opportunity to share SHRM’s Business Strategy and objectives for the year ahead while finding ways to explore partnerships to achieve success.

Your local HR team, Lower Columbia Human Resources Management Association (LCHRMA), is working hard to ensure we deliver timely information and resources to our local business community! Attend a meeting to find out more. LCHRMA hosts monthly meetings featuring a guest speaker that focuses on HR and employment related topics. Our meetings are open to all human resource professionals, business leaders, and students interested in human resource management. Still have questions? Contact the President, Stacey Brown, at lchrmacommunications@gmail.com.

Clatsop Child Care Advisory Receives Grant from Providence Seaside

Recently, Providence Seaside leadership and caregivers from Providence Community

Health Investment made a significant contribution for child care. The $100,000 donation

went to the NW Regional Child Care Resource and Referral as part of a broader community benefit initiative with their regional partnership grant program. The Clatsop Child Care Advisory is looking for additional involvement from other

community members in the county.

Click here to read the full press release. Contact Jack Bello at jbello@nwresd.k12.or.us or 503-338-3371 for any questions.

EV Ready Workplace

Forth has created a certification to recognize employers and workplaces leading the charge to address climate change and lower emissions by providing clean transportation options at the workplace. Electric Vehicle Adoption Leadership (EVAL) is a workplace charging certification program that offers tools and resources to increase workplace charging. The certification is free of charge for all employers during this first year of the program.

Employers from all industries and sizes, including state, local or Tribal government entities, community-based organizations and nonprofits, are eligible to apply. Check out the EVAL website for more information. You can reach out to eval@forthmobility.org for any questions you may have.

Promote your Business in Regional Gift Basket at Tourism Conference

Each year, we put together an Astoria & Warrenton basket to be auctioned off at the Oregon Destination Association conference. Regina attends, along with representatives from other visitor centers & destination management associations from across the state. These baskets are a great way for us to show off what is going on in our region so that the other attendees can help tell our story to the travelers they encounter.

The baskets include a combination of gift certificates (lodging, meals, shopping, activities, etc) and some items like locally made food, art or souvenirs. If you’d like to suggest, donate or discount an item for us to include in our basket this year, please let Regina know. We need to gather up the items and give them a descriptive list by December 20.

Update Your Oregon Lodging Listing

It’s time to make sure your lodging property is included in the 2024-2025 Travel Oregon Visitor Guide. Printed annually, the guide is the only statewide print piece for comprehensive lodging listings. Any transient lodging property in Oregon that pays the statewide 1.5% lodging tax is eligible for a free basic listing in the printed guide as well as a listing on traveloregon.com. Oregon Restaurant & Lodging Association (ORLA) manages the lodging database used to feed both directories.

Properties are required to update/verify their existing listing or submit a new lodging listing to ORLA by Dec. 8, 2023, for inclusion in the guide.

Questions? Please contact ORLA at Listings@OregonRLA.org.

Caregiver Honored with DAISY Award

CMH is pleased to announce Emergency Department nurse Kathleen Idzal as its most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. CMH gives out three DAISY awards each year. Most of the nominations come from patients or their family members. The DAISY Foundation was created in 1999 after 33-year-old J. Patrick Barnes died from complications from an auto-immune disease.

$2 Shop Local Challenge

The Astorian wants to encourage north coast shoppers to use $2 bills when shopping locally this holiday season. The bills recirculating in our local economy will remind residents how important it is to spend money at home. While it may seem easier to shop online these days, money spent in Clatsop County keeps businesses open, funds local charities and keeps local people employed.

The paper is partnering with Lewis & Clark Bank on this promotion. Or, click here for a poster for your business or workplace bulletin board.
