DETROIT, MI (May 31, 2022) – The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is proud to host Detroit’s largest ethnic festival, the 39th Annual African World Festival.
This year's festival will take place from July 15 to 17, several weeks earlier than usual, and return to downtown Detroit’s Hart Plaza. This renowned event is not only being held earlier in the summer, but will also feature new attractions.
“We have wanted to bring the Annual African World Festival back to Hart Plaza for several years now to accommodate the many vendors and performers who want to participate,” said Neil Barclay, the Wright Museum’s president and CEO. “Plus, this year our members will be admitted for free. It just made sense to bundle free admission to the weekend festival with all of the great programming we have year-round.”
A long-standing celebration of African culture, the festival is expected to attract more than 50,000 visitors over three days. This exciting and free event for Wright Museum members will feature an African marketplace with more than 150 vendors of Afro-centric souvenirs, visual arts, handcrafts, one-of-kind jewelry, apparel, food, and more!
Additionally, attendees will experience a vibrant fashion show, and performances from African drummers and dancers. There will also be a youth and family area, called Watoto Village, that will showcase entertaining storytellers.
“AWF is a special time in the Detroit community -- and a favorite destination for thousands of visitors who travel from around the world and across this nation to celebrate with us. I am grateful to support the Museum in continuing this treasured tradition," Njia Kai, the festival director.
We look forward to your coverage of this important community event! Admission is free for Wright Museum members. Admission prices for non-members will be announced soon. For more information visit: THEWRIGHT.ORG
