Once Again, TruMark Financial Literacy Program Supports AWHS!

This week the Development Department happily announced to the student body that, thanks to our students lollipop purchases and our Viking community making online donations, Archbishop Wood was able to reach the goal of raising $750 so that one of our teachers will be able to FEED THE PIG!

THE VOTES ARE IN! The WINNER…with 378 votes is…Ms. Tara Murphy! Congratulations, Ms. Murphy, on being chosen to represent Archbishop Wood and feeding Raines the Pig!!!

Because of the help of our Alumni, Students, Parents, and Friends, TruMark Financial Credit Union will award AWHS with a generous grant (up to $5,000.00!) to benefit the school's Financial Literacy Program to be put towards our teachers and students in the Business Department here at AWHS.

Archbishop Wood High School was thrilled to host Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez for his first visit to campus on September 9, 2021. To kickoff the 2021-2022 academic school year, Pérez visited classrooms, met teachers & students, and celebrated mass with the school community.

AWHS was honored to be chosen for the celebration and utilized the opportunity to warmly welcome the new students and families from Our Lady of Confidence, Bishop McDevitt, John W. Hallahan and St Basil's to their new home.

At the conclusion of mass, Archbishop Pérez blessed crucifixes that are now on display in the OLC classrooms.

student council 21-22.jpg

Congratulations to our students who were sworn in and celebrated during the Student Council Installation Mass & Induction Ceremony 2021. We look forward to a great school year under your leadership! We are most grateful for the privilege and honor of expanding our Student Council with the addition of our students who come to us from McDevitt, Hallahan, St Basil's!

senior siblings.jpg

We are happy to introduce this year's "Senior Siblings." This group of individuals are specifically in place to help assist our Freshman class, beginning in Homeroom each morning and throughout the school day as they adjust to this next chapter as Vikings.

Senior Siblings is the new version of what some AWHS Alumni may remember as "Big/Little Day." Senior Siblings was created to promote more time together to foster relationships and help new students get adjusted to their new surroundings. Everyone has the opportunity to sign up! It's up to the interest and discretion of the student.

Little Libraries.jpg
Little Libraries 1.jpg

The hallways of Archbishop Wood have recently been graced with "Little Libraries!"

These libraries are fully shelved by donations. If you would like to donate any books or any Amazon book cards, please send them to Mrs. Blunt in Room 338. Our libraries are shelved with a wide range of books. The books are diverse in levels and topics. Students are welcome to take books and read them. Teachers will not be patrolling their choices. Some books may contain questionable language or situations. As a result, we encourage parents to read with their students and help them to make appropriate book choices.

Art.jpg

Creative Expression and Illustration students complete the artwork portion of their self reflection project. Students were required to write a self reflection essay. Their art work should then mirror what they wrote about in their essay.

hunger banquet.jpg

Science teacher, Sharon Hartranft, hosted a "Hunger Banquet" in her Environmental Science class to get her students thinking about food insecurity and food disparity around the world. From this simulation she learned that we have some very compassionate young people here at AWHS!

engineering.jpg

Science teacher, Richard Barkley had his students construct robotic arms in their Engineering class by applying what they’ve learned during their lessons on hydraulics.

senior retreat 1.jpg
senior retreat.jpg

AWHS held their Senior Retreat on October 1st!

The theme for the retreat was "Competition" and Wood/McDevitt's former Campus Minister, Fr. Chris Walsh came back to Wood to help (our current Campus Minister, Father Paul) lead the retreat for our students! The day started with a breakfast for the students and quickly switched into an "athletic" competition of sorts where they had relay races, a balloon filling/popping game, push up contests and more! After the games were over the retreat moved into a discussion about how it is important to channel those same feelings and desires of winning a game and doing well on a test to the ultimate goal of achieving heaven as a result of being kind to one another.

The day wrapped up with praise and worship music featuring Bill Monaghan and then a liturgy celebrating our Seniors!

medical careers.jpg

Honors Medical Careers Students worked together in the lab tagging descriptions of body parts as a way to learn their proper medical anatomical terms. The students wrote out the medical term for the body part on hypoallergenic medical tape and then placed the medical term on the correct part of their body.
