Food Bank: Now on Saturdays
The Northshore Food Bank will now open the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 9a-12p. Volunteers can assist on one or two Saturdays a month packing boxes, loading cars, interviewing new clients, or directing traffic. All volunteers must go through orientation and training and be able to make a long-term commitment. Anyone interested can apply HERE. TIA (thanks in advance).

Keep Covington Beautiful Volunteers
Continue to Keep Covington Beautiful
On behalf of every resident and visitor that enjoys the wonderful flowers that brighten up our downtown streets, a big Thank You to the volunteers who spent a recent Saturday morning making it happen. Though the city helps fund and water the plants, the actual planting and care is done by community volunteers ... and could not be done without them. Special thanks to this team which, under the careful eye of Jessica St. Pierre, nicely pruned almost 50 downtown trees. Richard Comment personally oversees flowers on Gibson Street across from Dependable Glass. Master Gardener Billie Stanga has begun helping near Marsolan's. Whether downtown or in your neighborhood, every block is a possibility : )

Calls for service: 14 in 12 hour shift

Like most of our residents, I look forward to the day, later this summer, when we have 5 officers per 12 hour shift rather than 3. I am pleased our police have removed another gun from the streets and I am pleased that a juvenile golf cart driver was ticketed. When you see one of our officers, please thank them.

Jack-n-Nat's
... and a Roundabout we go.
What's up with the abandoned gas station?
The business entity that owns the defunct Jack-n-Nat's store has filed for bankruptcy. The bigger problem is the bank that financed the business is also defunct and controlled by the Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC). Both bankruptcies are in federal court.

We were able to get Chevron Corporate to clean up some of the signage on the site. As the weeds sprout from the cracks, we (the City) will continue to weed-eat and clean the property. We (the City) will place a lien on the property to recover our costs.

There's more. The LA Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) is preparing to build a roundabout at the intersection. Hence, this would be an awful time for anyone to open a new business on the site.
Our First Roundabout
Although DOTD is responsible for design and construction of the road, we (the City) are responsible for the necessary utility line relocations.

We have completed moving the utility lines. DOTD is at 60% design completion.
The FAQ: Can't we put a fountain, statue or plantings in the center?

The Answer: DOTD frowns upon anything which might obstruct the sight triangle within the circle.

Bogue Falaya River Rubber Duck Race!

But it's really the community supporting the Boys and Girls Club, Keep Covington Beautiful, Miracle League Northshore, NAMI, Ponchartrain Conservancy, Safe Harbor, Safe Haven and the Covington Rotary Foundation ... and the first duck to finish wins its owner a cool grand : )

It's also fun to see a bunch of Rotarians floundering in the waters of Bogue Falaya Park trying to wrangle several hundred rubber ducks (8:00am, June 26th).

To "own" one or more ducks:

Corner of Jefferson and 21st Avenue
100 + years ago
Remember when Jefferson Avenue had light poles running down the middle of it? And the street was made of dirt? Yeah, neither do I. However, the Covington Presbyterian Church at 222 S. Jefferson Avenue remembers. That's it on the right side of the picture (with a very young live oak in front). We're looking from 20th Avenue towards 21st. The building in the middle, in the distance is about where Rene Frederick's law firm is located today.

We live in a wonderful city. Enjoy your walks (but walk against the traffic flow), enjoy your bike rides (bike with the traffic flow) and be mindful of pedestrians in the streets (old, narrow sidewalks do not work for everyone).

Recycling reminder … no glass, no plastic bags : )

If you have bulk debris or green waste , missed trash or recycling or need a new trash receptacle, click for Coastal Customer Care Form.

Sidenote: Coastal continues to have a shortage of drivers, boom truck operators and hoppers resulting in a greater number of "brown piles" and "missed pick-ups."
