Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad Receives State Historical Society Grant for Steam Engine Rebuild
A grant from the Kansas State Historical Society that was announced over the weekend will help the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad’s efforts to get its prized steam locomotive back on the rails as soon as possible.
The grant in the amount of $79,152 will cover part of the cost of rebuilding Santa Fe 3415, which is out of service this season as work crews rebuild the engine, a maintenance procedure required every 15 years by the Federal Railroad Administration.
The KSHS Heritage Trust Fund provides matching funds to help preserve properties listed in the National Record of Historic Places. Santa Fe 3415 was placed on the national record in 2011.
The grant will help cover the cost of inspecting the locomotive’s boiler and replacing an intricate system of flue tubes, a process that requires outside consulting and skilled labor.
A crew from the Durango and Silverton steam railroad in Colorado was in Abilene last month to supervise a group of volunteers on the process of removing the old tubing and other construction tasks. About 15 volunteers from four states were in Abilene for January’s work weekend. The railroad plans to conduct organized work weekends every month until the project is completed.
A&SV President and General Manager Ross Boelling said that the railroad will need more money and volunteer hours to complete the rebuild, but work crews have done a remarkable job of dismantling the engine and carefully cataloging and storing parts.
“We would like to have the engine back in service late this year,” Boelling explained.
“Santa Fe 3415 figures to play a major role in Abilene’s observance of America’s 250th birthday in 2026, so we need to get the engine up and running. This grant will make us one step closer to completing that goal.”
The Santa Fe 3415 grant is one of ten projects to receive money from the KSHS Heritage Grant program this year. Boelling said work on the projects detailed in the A&SV grant will begin this summer.

Hometowns enjoys link to legacy of presidents
by Tri-Valley Dispatch
| Some of our presidents have come from major metropolitan areas while others were from small towns. While lately it seems most of our presidents have come from the larger areas, it was refreshing to see Jimmy Carter’s Plains, Georgia, in the spotlight. To these small towns, the presidents are more than another building or library, they’re the lifeblood of the community. Some are located directly off an interstate and some are hidden deep off the beaten path. These small towns cherish the presidents all the more. | |

2025 American Flag Sponsors
Visitors to Abilene frequently comment on the beautiful American flags lining Buckeye Avenue and NW 3rd Street. The American flags are one of the many wonderful attributes that make our community stand out.
To continue this tradition, the City of Abilene’s Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking sponsors for the American flags, which are placed on poles from I-70 along Buckeye Avenue to the south city limits and from Buckeye west on NW 3rd Street. The flags are flown from the Eisenhower Marathon weekend in April through Veterans Day. Because they are displayed for seven months, the flags and poles are more prone to wear and tear. The City of Abilene’s Public Works Department replaces them as needed.
Our goal is to purchase 200 flags for the 2025 season. The cost of each flag remains the same at $25, which includes the cost of the pole.
While the City of Abilene’s Public Works Department, Vyve Broadband and Linder Electric install the flags on the light poles, we rely on the community to provide funding for this project.
We hope you will consider purchasing one or more flags this year. Please complete the enclosed form and return it to Julie Roller Weeks at the Abilene CVB by January 24, 2025.
Thank you in advance for your continued support!

Explore Wild Bill Hickok's Abilene
While James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok may have died in Deadwood, he left his mark on Abilene.
After the death of Abilene’s first city marshal, Tom “Bear River” Smith, the city hired a man named James Butler Hickok. People better know him as “Wild Bill” Hickok. Hickok controlled the town from April to December of 1871. His reign as marshal ended with the shooting of Phil Coe in October. Hickok and Coe had a running dispute throughout the cattle season. Coe owned and operated the Bull’s Head Saloon. As the season was ending, Coe and some other Texans were out and about the town going from saloon to saloon. At some point, Coe pulled a pistol out and started shooting at a dog. Wild Bill came to see what was happening and saw Coe with the pistol.
