Outdoor Art in Abilene, Kansas

by Travel Gumbo

If your travels take you to the beautiful city of Abilene, Kansas, you’ll soon learn that art is an important part of the overall draw of this one of America’s most celebrated small cities.

No matter what attraction you visit here, from the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum to the Seelye Mansion, you’ll find large cowboy boots and murals featured all over the city. You’ll also find other treasures like the World’s Largest Belt Buckle and World’s Largest “I Like Ike” Button.

Abilene Celebrates Community Development Week

Community Development Week is being celebrated across Kansas, and it’s a great reminder of what’s possible when communities work together.

Here in Abilene, we’re grateful to be part of that story.

Through collaboration between the City of Abilene Kansas, Dickinson County, Kansas, and Dickinson County Economic Development Corporation:

• 303 N. Broadway, home of Rackets Tap House, received a Kansas Department of Commerce HEAL Grant

• Three buildings in the historic Post Office Block at 109 NW 3rd Street (Rural Rental, LLC / John Kollhoff) were awarded CDBG Commercial Rehabilitation funding

These investments are helping strengthen downtown, support local businesses, and enhance the experience for both residents and visitors.

We appreciate the partnerships at the local and state level that make projects like these possible, and we’re proud to see that impact right here in Abilene!

America Likes Shopping Local

From western wear and antiques to candles, craft supplies, and sweet treats, Abilene’s locally owned shops are full of personality. Every purchase supports small businesses that make our downtown shine.

Take a stroll, pop into a shop, and discover something you didn’t know you needed.

8 of the Quietest Kansas Towns

A little over two hours west of Kansas City, Abilene is a prairie town right off of Interstate 70 and the Smoky Hill River. The town is the childhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower and is home to the Eisenhower Presidential Library. Historically, it was one of the most significant cattle drive towns of the wild west as it is located at the end of the Chisholm Trail. Today, it stoically represents the chaos of years past in a calm setting.

Abilene is also home to the Greyhound Hall of Fame. Visitors here can meet the two resident greyhounds and tour exhibits showcasing displays honoring the animal all the way back to ancient times. Other fun town quirks include a wooden bowling alley at the Seelye Mansion and the C.W. Parker Carousel, the oldest operational carousel of its kind. Head to Abilene and experience a tranquil setting of Americana.
