My husband's job relocated us out of the KC area to Wichita, KS. If you have been a What You're Missing KC! fan, don't worry! KC will always be my hometown and I have added a
What You're Missing KC! page as I do get back quite often and I still get press releases and news about KC. And of course have to share the love I have for the amazing local food scene!
The reason for the change stemmed from his new job position which requires quite a bit of travel and since our nest is empty, I am free to tag along.
In addition to work trips we also enjoy getting away at our leisure with cruising being a favorite! I have started this blog to share some of our travel adventures as well as my favorite products, recipes, healthy living tips and anything that makes living finer.

With your help, Abilene's Three One One received recognition in KANSAS! Magazine's "Best Local Eats" contest. Now, we're asking for your help again to help Abilene receive recognition as a favorite place for weekend getaways.
Readers' Choice Weekend Getaway
Sometimes you just have to get away. Maybe as a couple, family or just some friends needing to unplug and reconnect. What's your favorite destination in Kansas to take a weekend getaway?
Submit your destination between now and March 15, and tells us what places you'd visit, events you would attend and why you'd want to spend 36 hours at this destination. The most submissions will move on to the voting round. Voting will be open from March 16 through May 31. Winning "Weekend Getaways" will be announced in the winter 2018 issue.

Vendors Wanted
Abilene will be the scene of its first ever outdoor antique festival in the downtown area on May 12. Five blocks will be closed to traffic and filled with vendors selling vintage, retro, antique furniture and decor, repurposed items, and food. The event is being presented by two downtown antique malls, Mud Creek and Abilene Downtown Antique Mall and is being organized by volunteers who plan to make this an annual event.

5 Star Reviews - Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home
Anyone interested in U.S. history and/or its Presidents should stop here. You can spend as little as an hour or as much as several hours seeing the exhibits and visiting the various buildings. There are enough interactive displays to keep the kids occupied, and the museum will teach you about President Eisenhower, the Chisholm Trail and of course, World War II.

Patriotism in Abilene
It's that time of year again! The City of Abilene's Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking sponsors for the American flags, which are placed on poles from I-70 along Buckeye to the south city limits and from Buckeye west on Third Street. The flags are flown from the Eisenhower Marathon weekend through Veterans Day. Because they are flown for seven months, the flags and poles are more prone to wear and tear. The City of Abilene's Public Works Department replaces them as needed.
Our goal this year is to purchase 200 flags for the 2018 season. The cost of each flag remains the same at $25, which includes the pole and bracket.
Volunteers from the American Legion and VFW attach the flags to the flagpoles. The Public Works Department, Eagle Communications, Abilene Rental and Linder Electric install the flags on the light poles.
We rely on the community to provide funding for this project and hope you will consider purchasing one or more flags this year.

This 1949 film is based upon the Pulitzer Prize novel "All the King's Men" by Robert Penn Warren. Broderick Crawford won an Oscar for his portrayal of bull-headed, backwoods politician Willie Stark in this powerful drama about political and personal corruption and the corrosive effects of power on the human soul. The story was inspired by the rise and fall of Huey P. Long, Louisiana's governor and one-time senator. Free admission.

Ike Book Talk: All the King's Men

"All the King's Men" is a tale of power and corruption in the Depression-era South as it portrays the dramatic political rise and governorship of Willie Stark. Based loosely on the life and times of former Louisiana Governor, Huey P. Long, one central theme of the novel is that all actions have consequences, and that it is impossible for an individual to stand aloof and be a mere observer of life. Originally published in 1946 and awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 1947, "Time" magazine and Modern Library each list "All the King's Men" among the top 100 novels. The book's title is drawn from the nursery rhyme, "Humpty Dumpty," as well as Huey P. Long's slogan, "Every man a king."
Linda Lewis will facilitate this discussion of the second title in the 2018 Ike Book Talk series, presented as part of the Kansas Humanities Council Talk About Literature in Kansas (TALK) program. This series of six book discussions will be held every other month throughout the year. All books in the 2018 series have a connection to Dwight D. Eisenhower and are available to check out from the Abilene Public Library or for purchase at the Eisenhower Presidential Library gift shop. The programs are free and open to the public, and registration is not required.
