 Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month –

In April and All Year Long

At Abilities First, we believe acceptance isn’t just a moment—it’s a movement. Throughout Autism Acceptance Month in April and every day of the year, we remain committed to embracing neurodiversity, uplifting every voice, and supporting people of all abilities as they thrive in school, at work, and in the community.

From our classrooms to our career pathways, Abilities First creates inclusive spaces where students with autism can learn, grow, and shine. Whether it is through individualized instruction, sensory-friendly environments, or engaging programs that foster independence and self-expression, our educational teams are here every step of the way.

In our Employment Services program, we continue to empower individuals on the autism spectrum to pursue meaningful work, develop job skills, and build lasting careers. With tailored support from dedicated job coaches and employer partnerships across the Hudson Valley, we’re seeing more inclusive workplaces—and more proud, capable individuals achieving their goals.

This year, we were incredibly proud to see an enormous turnout from the Abilities First community at the Hudson Valley Walk for Autism at James Baird State Park in Pleasant Valley. The sea of blue shirts (even in the rain), smiles, and signs of support reflected the heart of our mission: creating a world where everyone is valued, included, and celebrated. Let’s continue walking the walk—toward understanding, inclusion, and acceptance for all.

With Deepest Gratitude to Gary Cassiello for His Leadership and Years of Board Service

Abilities First extends heartfelt thanks to Gary Cassiello, who recently concluded his tenure on the Abilities First, Inc. Board of Directors, including his service as Board Chair. Since joining in 2016, Gary has been a dedicated advocate for our mission, offering unwavering support and guidance through years of growth, challenge, and achievement. His commitment to those we serve has been evident in every decision and milestone.

Reflecting on his time with AFI, Gary shared, “It has been a privilege to work with such a talented and committed group of people.”

Now enjoying retirement in Tennessee, Gary leaves behind a legacy of thoughtful leadership and lasting impact. We are deeply grateful for his service and wish him the very best in this next chapter.

Spotlight on Generosity: Michelle Smith and Her Commitment to the Abilities First Mission

Abilities First and the Foundation for Abilities First NY (FAFNY) are proud to recognize Michelle Smith for her generous support, leadership, and unwavering advocacy. As a successful advisor and leader with over 30 years in the financial services industry, Michelle has combined professional expertise with a deeply personal mission.

Michelle is the proud mother of a son with Down syndrome, a role that has shaped her into a fierce advocate for families of children with disabilities. She brings that same passion and dedication to her work as a FAFNY Board Member, where she helps guide the Foundation’s efforts to support inclusive programs and opportunities for individuals of all abilities.

In addition to lending her voice and leadership, Michelle has also extended generous support through her company, helping fuel the mission of Abilities First and inspiring others to do the same. Her commitment is a powerful example of how personal experience, professional success, and community advocacy can come together to make a meaningful impact.

Thank you, Michelle, for your partnership and the compassion you bring to the Abilities First community. Michelle's generosity and commitment are helping to create brighter futures — not only for her own family, but for so many others.

In Loving Memory of Theodore Otto Prenting

Abilities First honors the life and legacy of Theodore (Ted) Prenting, a devoted supporter, former Vice-Chair, and founding member of the Foundation for Abilities First NY (FAFNY), who passed away on April 17, 2025.

Ted and his late wife, Bernardine, were first introduced to Abilities First while seeking a supportive program for their son, Peter, who has now been part of our Residential and Supported Employment programs for over 35 years. Their family's deep connection to our mission continued through the board service of Bernardine and their daughter, Mary Nell Prenting-Palumbo. After their passing, Ted carried on their legacy. As a founding FAFNY board member, Ted helped shape the fundraising foundation of Abilities First, serving as Vice-Chair and on the Finance Committee. In 2022, he was honored as the Abilities First Friend for his extraordinary commitment at the Abilities First Community Partners Breakfast.

Ted also established the Prenting Family Recreation Fund, which provides meaningful social and recreational opportunities for the individuals we serve — a legacy that continues to enrich lives today. We are truly thankful for Ted’s leadership, compassion, and unwavering belief in the mission of Abilities First. His impact will be felt for generations to come.
