Summer Adventures Across Abilities First Adult Programs | |
This summer, Abilities First adult programs embraced the season with a full calendar of recreational activities that brought joy, connection, and discovery to our community. From the excitement of local hikes and boat trips on the Hudson River, to train rides that whisked participants to beloved Hudson Valley treasures like Cold Spring, the summer months were filled with opportunities to explore and enjoy the world beyond our walls.
The fun didn’t stop there—our programs also joined the community in celebrating at the Dutchess County Fair and cheering on the Hudson Valley Renegades! These experiences are more than just outings—they’re a chance for individuals to make memories, gain confidence in new environments, and enjoy the simple pleasures of summer together.
None of this would have been possible without YOUR constant support of the Foundation for Abilities First, along with generous community partners like M&T Bank and the Troccia Family, whose dedication ensures that every person we support has access to meaningful and inclusive opportunities. Your investment in our mission helps transform everyday moments into extraordinary memories. To support the Foundation, please click HERE!
As we reflect on this season of sunshine and shared adventures, we are reminded of the importance of community, partnership, and inclusion. Together, we are creating experiences that enrich lives, build independence, and showcase the vibrant spirit of the individuals we serve.
| | Extended School Year at Abilities First: Learning, Growing, and Having Fun All Summer Long! | | |
At Abilities First, learning doesn’t stop when the school year ends—it simply shifts gears! Our Extended School Year (ESY) program ensures that students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) continue to thrive through meaningful learning experiences, therapies, and social opportunities over the summer months.
ESY is essential for many of our students, providing consistency and structure that help prevent learning loss and support ongoing growth in communication, motor skills, academics, and independence. For children with IDD, these months provide more than just academics—they foster confidence, routine, and connection with peers and staff.
But ESY isn’t all work—there’s plenty of summer fun too! Our educational sites embraced the season to name a few with a Water Day at Hyde Park Education Center, where students splashed, played, and cooled off in style, a colorful Straus Family Pavilion School Carnival, filled with games, laughter, and joy, and a festive LaGrange School summer celebration, bringing families, staff, and students together to wrap up a successful summer.
We’re proud of our students for their incredible achievements this summer and grateful to our dedicated staff for making learning both effective and fun. ESY continues to demonstrate that education is not just about academics—it’s about building confidence, strengthening skills, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Rise & Shine, Hudson Valley: Life Skills Lab Hosts
Better Breakfast Brunch
| | |
It’s hard to believe it was two years ago when Abilities First received $700,000 from OPWDD to launch the Life Skills Lab. We’ve spent two fun and delicious years cooking in our Teaching Kitchen program, learning about healthy eating, meal planning, and building cooking skills.
To celebrate, Abilities First is throwing a Better Breakfast Brunch open to its adult programs and adults in our sister programs in the Hudson Valley. Persons receiving services will take an interactive food journey visiting food stations to learn about healthy ways to start the day, make breakfast recipes, and taste new breakfast treats. The recipes come from the digital cookbook developed as part of the grant and will give everyone healthy and delicious alternatives to sugary breakfast cereals, but will be just as easy to make. The event is being organized by Apex Kitchens Rx and will take place at Poughkeepsie Day School.
If you’d like to volunteer to help set up on Friday afternoon, September 12th, or for the event on September 13th, please reach out to Marcy Handler at marcyhandler@abilitiesfirstny.org.
