Spreading Love & Learning:

The Power of Social-Emotional Learning at

Abilities First Schools

At Abilities First Schools, education goes beyond academics—we nurture the social and emotional growth of our students to help them build confidence, relationships, and essential life skills.

This month, our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) sessions took on a special Valentine’s Day theme, celebrating kindness, friendship, and self-expression in a fun and engaging way!

Students at the Straus Family Pavilion School, with School Counselor Dominic Scecchitano, participated in heartwarming activities designed to reinforce the core SEL principles of self-awareness, empathy, and positive social interactions. Activities included heart-shaped chocolate making, where students learned about teamwork and sharing while enjoying a sweet treat! Students read "A Little Spot of Love". This engaging book allows students to explore ways to show love and kindness to themselves and others. And each student crafted heartfelt messages for their peers, practicing gratitude and positive communication skills.

These activities not only made Valentine’s Day special at SFP but also reinforced the importance of emotional expression, kindness, and inclusion—key aspects of SEL that empower students to connect, thrive, and grow in their learning environment. School Counselor Dom says, "Students who are supported to have strong Emotional Intelligence are even more likely to work on their Academic Intelligence."

At Abilities First, we believe that a strong heart leads to a strong mind, and we’re committed to helping our students develop the social-emotional skills they need to succeed—on Valentine’s Day and every day!

Creating Meaningful Experiences: How the Foundation for Abilities First Enriches Lives

Special Guest Writer: Michelle Smith, FAFNY Board Member

At Abilities First, the impact of field trips, community outings, and celebrations funded by the Foundation for Abilities First New York (FAFNY) goes far beyond entertainment. These events provide individuals, families, and caregivers with opportunities for connection, inclusion, and joy—experiences that many take for granted but are truly life-changing for our community.

As a mother of a 23-year-old with Down syndrome and a FAFNY board member, I know firsthand how important it is to keep individuals engaged and fulfilled. Thanks to FAFNY’s generous support, individuals can enjoy:

Renegades Baseball Nights – A chance to enjoy America’s favorite pastime in an inclusive atmosphere. Live Wrestling Events – Exciting outings that create shared experiences with peers. Annual Summer Picnic & Holiday Parties – Cherished traditions filled with fun, music, and celebration.

More than just events, these experiences build confidence, foster independence, and create lasting memories. For caregivers and families, they offer a sense of community and shared joy, knowing their loved ones have enriching, inclusive opportunities that enhance their quality of life.

Help us continue making these moments possible! Your support allows individuals to engage, grow, and thrive within Abilities First and the broader community. Join us by donating or getting involved today by clicking HERE!

A Champion for Abilities First: Celebrating

David Melby's Extraordinary Impact

Thanks to champions like David Melby, individuals of all abilities continue to thrive in our community. As a dedicated Foundation for Abilities First New York (FAFNY) Board Member and passionate advocate, David's unwavering commitment has transformed countless lives since 2012.

David joined the Abilities First Board, where he quickly distinguished himself through exceptional leadership as Development Chair, Vice President, and President. His remarkable commitment of time, talent, and service to Abilities First, Inc. earned him our prestigious Volunteer Award in 2015. When FAFNY was established in 2018, David was among its founding members, helping to shape the Foundation's mission. His vision has been instrumental in building a sustainable organization that consistently secures funding to enhance programs and services for the Abilities First community. His strategic guidance continues to strengthen our foundation's ability to fund essential programs and create enriching opportunities for those we serve.

What makes David's contribution truly special is how he's inspired others to join our cause. Through his leadership at NFP, he's fostered a culture of giving that extends beyond financial support. Not only has NFP provided consistent and generous funding, but David has also encouraged his team to volunteer their time and talents, creating a ripple effect of compassion throughout our community.

In reflecting on his long-standing involvement with Abilities First, David Melby, FAFNY Board Member, shared, "Although NFP, an Aon Company, is global, our clients and staff care about their own communities. We believe the best way to promote our corporate values is to support employee community volunteerism. This enabled me to make community involvement a meaningful part of my personal and professional life. My involvement with Abilities First spans over 30 years and began with a friend’s introduction to the organization, which I soon learned touched hundreds of families in my community. As I grew to know the mission of Abilities First, I found myself committed to helping the organization improve and grow to impact even more families in the future. My company and my family have seen first-hand how donations of time and treasure have made a difference for those in need the most."

We sincerely thank David, NFP, and their team for their extraordinary generosity and commitment. Our leadership team is incredibly grateful for this enduring partnership, which has strengthened our foundation and expanded our impact year after year. Their kindness continues to inspire us all.

Celebrating Black History Month at Abilities First

Throughout February, the DEIA Committee at Abilities First was proud to celebrate and share resources that honor Black history, culture, and contributions. This year, we featured a special slide presentation highlighting the significance of Black History Month. Join Us at Rally in the Valley – Advocacy in Action!

Abilities First, alongside our New York State partners, continues to fight for fair funding and essential resources for individuals with disabilities. While recent investments by Governor Hochul and the Legislature are a step forward, they fall short in ensuring living wages and sustainable services.

At the Rally in the Valley, we’re calling for:

  • 7.8% Medicaid Rate Increase
  • Worker Wage Commission
  • Increased Capital Funding

Now is the time to make our voices heard! Join us in advocating for a stronger, more inclusive future. Every voice matters!
