Exploring Inclusion, One Adventure at a Time

At Abilities First, we believe that building a more inclusive community starts with connection—and this summer, we're doing just that through our Passport to Possibilities project!
Launched as a fun and engaging way to celebrate local experiences, Passport to Possibilities invites individuals supported by Abilities First, along with their families and staff, to explore the rich culture, creativity, and natural beauty of the Hudson Valley and beyond.
Each participant receives a colorful passport booklet filled with free or low-cost destinations to visit—ranging from scenic parks and historic sites to museums, community events, and small local treasures. With every stop, individuals collect a stamp or snap a photo, marking memories made and milestones of inclusion.
But this initiative is about more than just sightseeing. It’s a celebration of community engagement, personal growth, and the simple joy of trying something new. Whether it’s walking a new trail, enjoying live music, or exploring an art gallery, every experience helps build confidence, foster relationships, and affirm the value of inclusive access.

Adaptive Design Hudson Valley (ADHV) is a dedicated in-kind community partner whose impact has reached students across our school programs—from Myers Corners to our newest collaboration in Hyde Park. For several years now, ADHV has generously designed and constructed custom adaptive devices that enhance the quality of life for children with physical limitations, helping them experience more independence, comfort, and joy throughout their school day. They do this through close collaboration with passionate OT professionals, teachers, and other caregivers.
Their mission, “Diversity Creating Accessibility,” is brought to life through inclusive opportunities that engage individuals of all backgrounds in the creation of these life-changing tools. The adaptive devices—crafted from various materials —are not only durable and functional but also comparable to factory-built alternatives. What's more, the process empowers interns, professionals, and volunteers, fostering a powerful cycle of mutual contribution. From footrests to supportive seating, each item is tailored with care and skill to meet the unique needs of our students. These thoughtful adaptations have opened new doors for participation and engagement in the classroom—and it’s all provided in-kind by this remarkable organization.
