Abilities In Motion Talent Show Is Coming Soon!
Showcasing Talent, Confidence, and Community
| | |
Get ready for an unforgettable event as Abilities First proudly presents the return of the Abilities in Motion Talent Show—a celebration of creativity, courage, and the extraordinary talents of the people we support! This inspiring showcase brings together people with disabilities for an event of dance, music, and self-expression, proving once again that ability knows no bounds.
A Tradition of Talent
What began as a spontaneous idea among program participants has blossomed into one of our most cherished events. As Cheryl Bogdanowicz, who has proudly supervised all of the Abilities First shows, recalls, “Our first show in 2018 took place at our old workshop, complete with a homemade curtain and 12 incredible acts. By 2019, we moved to the Calvary Chapel, and now, we’re thrilled to present our third installment. The performers continue to amaze us every time, bringing tears to our eyes with their passion and talent.”
From powerful vocal performances to high-energy dances, the Abilities in Motion Talent Show is a true testament to the confidence, creativity, and spirit of our community. The dedication and enthusiasm of our performers shine through every step of the way—and it's all made possible thanks to the incredible support of our WOW (Without Walls) staff, who go above and beyond to bring this event to life. The photos below offer a behind-the-scenes glimpse of our performers rehearsing with all heart, practicing their routines, building confidence, and preparing to take the stage with pride and joy.

Featuring the “Hats Off” Project
This year’s show will also highlight the Hats Off Project—a powerful visual celebration of self-expression, identity, and creativity. Each project participant designed a one-of-a-kind hat and matching frame, resulting in a portrait that reveals both what we choose to share with the world and what lies beneath the surface.
The project was made possible through generous funding from Arts Mid-Hudson, with the engaging and inspiring workshop led by Crazy Over Art on Tour. Their creativity and guidance brought each person’s vision to life—tipping our hats not just to art, but to individuality itself.

Celebrating the Heart of Our Classrooms:
Teacher Appreciation Week & School Nurse Day
| | |
This May, Abilities First Schools & Education Centers proudly celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week and School Nurse Day—a time to honor the dedicated professionals who give their all to support our students every day.
Our teachers, classroom staff, and school nurses do far more than educate and care—they nurture confidence, spark joy, and adapt their approach to meet every student’s unique needs. In the Abilities First community, this role carries even deeper meaning. Here, every small success is a big win, every milestone is celebrated, and every student is met with the understanding and encouragement they deserve.
To our incredible teachers and school nurses, we thank you for your tireless commitment, your endless patience, and your unwavering belief in the potential of every student. You are the heart of Abilities First—and we are endlessly grateful.
| | Prom Magic at Abilities First: A Day to Remember | | |
The 2025 Abilities First Prom was truly magical—and the joyful smiles on our students’ faces said it all! The day was filled with music, style, dancing, and unforgettable memories. At Abilities First, prom is more than a dance—it’s a celebration of milestones, confidence, and belonging.
Special thanks to our generous donors, who turned prom dreams into reality—from outfits and décor to those extra-special touches. We’re also deeply grateful to Jane Anderson and the Poughkeepsie Elks Club volunteers for their time and generous support. To our staff, students, and families—thank you for making the 2025 Abilities First Prom a celebration of joy, inclusion, and pure magic.

Iris Robles is a Teaching Assistant at Middletown Education Center. With over 20 years of service, Iris has been a pillar of compassion and commitment, supporting students, families, and staff with warmth, dedication, and heart. From bridging language gaps to quietly stepping up when needed, she exemplifies true advocacy in action.
Erich Krueger, Community Pre-Vocational Specialist, was recognized by peers for his incredible impact across multiple programs, including School to Work, Community Pre-Voc, and Think Ahead. Erich is known not only for his experience and insight but for the deep, personal relationships he builds with those we support.
