Guard.me Health Insurance
Payment and Opt-Out Deadline: May 23, 2022

Greetings!

Student ID Number: [Student ID Number]

Whether you're planning to come to Canada soon or will be starting your studies from your home country, it is important for you to understand the BC health insurance system and what applies to you. There is a lot of info below, so please read it carefully and thoroughly to ensure you understand your responsibilities when it comes to health insurance. Please visit Health Insurance for International Students for further details.

Basic Health Insurance: MSP of BC

If you are currently living in British Columbia, have recently arrived, or are intending to travel to Canada soon, you are required to enroll in the Medical Services Plan of British Columbia (MSP).

It is mandatory to enroll in MSP if you will be living in British Columbia for 6 months or longer. MSP is basic health insurance covering the cost of medically-necessary insured doctor services. It is your responsibility to apply and send your payment of $75/month directly to Health Insurance BC.

Apply online for MSP as soon as you arrive in BC and before you start your studies at CapU. Your bill and MSP card will be mailed to you directly.

Short-term Temporary Health Insurance: guard.me

As there is a three month waiting period for MSP to begin, all new international students will be automatically enrolled in temporary medical insurance called guard.me to ensure your wellbeing during this waiting period.

  • Cost of guard.me: Approximately CAD $188 for three months
  • Coverage period: May 9 - August 19, 2022* (if arriving before May 9, 2022 you will be enrolled starting the day you arrive in Canada for 3 months)
  • Charge applied to student accounts: May 4, 2022
  • Opt-out deadline: May 23, 2022
  • Guard.me Payment deadline: May 23, 2022 at 4 p.m. PT. See How to Pay.

*Coverage will begin the day you arrive in Canada and is valid for 3 months

Opt-out Options
Please ensure you opt-out by May 23, 2022 if one of the following options applies to you:

1) I have valid BC MSP Coverage
If you already have valid coverage by BC MSP, you are eligible to opt-out of the guard.me insurance plan. To opt out, you must complete the online application including the alternate insurance declaration and identify your start date and end date under the other plan at the time you apply to opt out. Your BC MSP coverage must be for the entire coverage period or your opt-out will be declined.

2) I am studying outside of Canada for the Summer 2022 semester
If you will not be in Canada for the Summer 2022 semester, you may opt out by successfully completing the Out of Canada Declaration and Waiver. If your application to opt-out is received prior to the deadline and is submitted successfully, you will not be charged for guard.me medical insurance. Please note, if you decide to come to Canada after choosing this option, you will be required to purchase late arrival coverage. This will become available for purchase after the end of add/drop period.

*If you are already in Canada, and have purchased guard.me insurance coverage, please disregard this portion of the message.

Extended Health Insurance: StudentCare (Sept. 2022)

The Capilano Students’ Union (CSU) Health and Dental Plan is called StudentCare and provides extended medical coverage for services not covered by MSP, including:
  • prescription drugs and vaccinations
  • accidents and emergencies
  • health practitioners (physiotherapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, etc.)
  • vision care
  • dental care
  • travel coverage

Extended medical coverage is also mandatory while you are studying in Canada. Favorable rates have been negotiated by the CapU Student Union, making it a cost effective option for your extended health and dental coverage.

Please note, all students are automatically enrolled in StudentCare every September.
