UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL
Tosca
One Big Wow! of an Opera
by Giacomo Puccini

Tosca is the quintessential opera. It’s an opera that has everything you could possibly ever want in an opera – a compelling story, intense drama, heart-melting romance, complex characters and above all, some of the most beautiful music ever written for the operatic stage.

It’s a great challenge for any artistic team to somehow make sure that all of the elements in this amazingly rich opera are conveyed convincingly on the stage for the audience and I’m thrilled to say that with the superb cast, orchestra and production team we’ve assembled for this production, the audience is going to get everything it could possibly want from Tosca and even more. I will send out more information on the incredible stars for Tosca in the next few days, but now I want to spend a little time talking about the composer.

As the stage director for Tosca , I have been living with this opera for the last several months, thinking about it, preparing for it and now finally putting it on the stage with our remarkably talented performers. It now feels like the opera is part of my molecular structure and I am in total awe of this operatic masterwork, but particularly of its creator, Giacomo Puccini .
Puccini is rightfully hailed as one of the greatest operatic composers that ever lived, but the thing that impresses me most about him isn’t the artistry of his music, which is extraordinary, but rather the selflessness of his artistry. He didn’t compose with the high and mighty in mind. He didn’t compose solely for the aristocracy and the rich. He composed for the everyday person on the street – for you and for me, for the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker. His music is intended for everyone and he wrote it with the sole intent to be enjoyed by everyone, no matter what your status in life is.

So even though Tosca is often perceived as a grand, lavish opera that is only meant for the elite of society, it’s not . It’s your opera and you need to experience it, because once you experience it, you’ll be deeply moved by the story, completely carried away by the music and in total awe of the whole theatrical and musical experience. Tosca is an opera that draws the audience in at so many different levels, that all one can say when the curtain comes down at the end is “Wow!” And I think we could all use a little good old fashioned, positive “Wow!” in our lives right now.

So be there at the Pantages Theater on February 8, 14 or 16 to experience one of the most amazing operatic “Wows!” you’ll ever get to have – Tosca!

See you at the Opera!
