Don't Depend On Apps For Diagnosis
|Consumers who use smartphone applications to analyze suspicious lesions or moles are at risk of having inaccurate diagnoses and delayed treatments, according to a new study. Researchers conducted a diagnostic accuracy study of four smartphone apps purportedly designed to detect melanoma. Of these, three incorrectly classified 30 percent or more melanomas.
Study authors noted that the popularity of healthcare-related smartphone apps is likely to rise, but that any apps offering medical advice could be dangerous to the user's health if the advice is misleading or inaccurate.
The skin cancer detection apps reviewed in the study aren't subject to regulatory oversight, and although they are meant only for educational purposes, some consumers may mistake them as a substitute for advice from a physician.
"I think the most qualified source for skin cancer screening remains to be from a board-certified Dermatologist," said Dr. Stephen Ho. "It is very difficult to replace years of training and experience with a medical app. I believe medical technologies can be useful in our care of patients, but I doubt they can ever completely replace the traditional physician-patient experience," added Ho.
The findings were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association - Dermatology

Rejuvenation At The Genetic Level

|Clinical studies have been showing rejuvenating effects of broadband light (BBL) for some time, but this is the first study to go far beyond appearance to show rejuvenation at the genetic level.
The study ("Rejuvenation of Gene Expression Pattern of Aged Human Skin by BroadBand Light Treatment," J. Invest.. Dermat.) treated forearms of female patients with BBL three times at four-week intervals. Skin biopsies from treated and untreated skin were taken. Results from treated skin showed "rejuvenation" in a number of genes linked to the aging process.
Now there is objective evidence that shows actual changes at the molecular level. Although studies need to be done to determine if these results persist, it excites patients and providers that this laser treatment could benefit on a deeper level than anticipated. Click here to read the full article
