Bountiful Bites
August Newsletter

Abundance is here!

Nature is designed to make enough for everyone; we just have to do a better job of stewarding the abundance locally and staying in right relationship with other regions and the environment. Now is the time of unprecedented disasters and challenges- environmental and man made. Now is also the time of apples, tomatoes, melons, pears, peppers, and much more fruit. Help us ensure that all community members can benefit from our thriving local food system. Volunteer, support local farmers and markets, donate, connect.

Remember, we are surrounded by abundance and the solutions are out there. Join us in being part of the solution! #Thefutureislocal

Bounty Hunters Training, September 5th and 7th
Calling all Gleaners and Food Waste Activists!

The Bounty Hunters gleaning program is a network of amazing volunteers who harvest and redistribute local garden and farm-grown produce to folks in our community in need of nutritious fresh fruits and vegetables. We take from our neighbors' abundance that would otherwise go to waste and give it to our neighbors in need.

Read on for more information or if you have too much produce check out our page on  food donations here.

Visit the Bounty Farmstand!

Stop the Bounty Farm on Thursdays from 3-6pm and check out our beautiful produce! It is a sliding scale farmstand so we offer 30% discount to anyone who self-identifies as low-income (no proof necessary) and a 50% discount if you are a CalFresh/EBT customer.  Our mission is to make farm-fresh food accessible and affordable for ALL! Come enjoy the bounty of summer and support your local food system.

AND starting in mid-September, we will have an apple press on site to rent so people can press their own fresh apple juice! Stay tuned for more information and sign ups.
Bounty Farm Welcomes New Friends: Red Wiggler Worms!

Last month the amazing Sonoma County Youth Ecology Corps built us a worm bin so we can start experimenting with vermiculture a the Bounty Farm. This month we introduced these red wiggler worms to their new home and they are already happily munching away on the farm's composted fruit and veggies and producing black gold!

What is vermiculture? Vermiculture, or worm composting, uses worms to process food waste and turn it into a nutrient-rich soil that plants love! Come visit these wiggly friends at the farm and learn more about different composting methods!

Thank you to the Gertz Family for heeding our call for worms, and a belated happy (wiggly) birthday to Sue!
Funder Spotlight: Heffernan Insurance Group

This month we would like to give a special shout out to the Heffernan Insurance Group for taking the time to lend a hand at the farm and provide a grant. These folks helped us harvest for our produce outlets and prepared our Barn Field for fall crops by weeding, laying irrigation, and planting! If your company is interested in having a corporate volunteer day at the Bounty Farm, please contact education@petalumabounty.org.

As always, we have drop-in volunteer hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9-12pm and Thursdays from 3-6pm. Come help us harvest the bounty of summer and prepare for the transition into the fall months!
