From the Pastor's Desk
Dear church,
Yesterday morning, I attended our synod’s Chrism Mass, which takes place annually during Holy Week. It is at the Chrism Mass that the church blesses its holy oils and rostered ministers reaffirm their ordination vows.
As I stood with colleagues from our synod, we were reminded of our ministry of presence, to be the body of Christ in the world. And as I renewed my vows, I did not renew my commitment to being present in my work but rather, renewed my commitment to be present in relationship—God’s relationship with us, and our relationship with one another.
As we move through Holy Week, let us remember that same presence of relationship.
This Maundy Thursday, instead of sitting in pews, we will gather round one table set before us and hear again Christ’s command to love one another through humble service. On Good Friday, we stand at the foot of the cross and pray the ancient bidding prayers—the intercessions that hold the whole world before God—and join generations who have carried their griefs and hopes to the cross. And on Easter morning, we gather in joy to celebrate the God who brings life out of all places.
Alongside our Holy Week journey, this month is also full of opportunities to deepen our relationships with one another. These moments remind us that church is not just something we attend, but a community we build together. Please look at our calendar below for ways to plug into our church community.
Each of these gatherings is rooted in the same truth Holy Week proclaims: let us be drawn into relationship with God and with one another.
Yours faithfully In Christ,
Pastor Tom
