AL Reopening & IB updates
Dear AL Families,
It was a real pleasure seeing the Kindergarten and 1st grade students back into their classrooms and engaged in learning activities. They were so excited! We look forward to having the 2nd to 6th graders back next week. We hope to have all the grade levels in hybrid mode sometime in February once the situation allows it. Some of the challenges we are currently facing are student transportation and finding enough substitute teachers to replace sick or quarantined teachers, and those on FMLA leave.
As you know, both the British and the South African variants of the Covid-19 have been detected in the country. Consequently, I will strongly urge our community to support a safe, healthy and sustained reopening of our school by continuing to strictly follow the recommendations of the national and local health authorities.
On a different note, I would like to inform you that, this week, our IB (International Baccalaureate) consultant interviewed a few board members, high school students, teachers and parents. The virtual visit is part of our IB Diploma Program authorization process. He was very impressed with our school vision and program. AL's IB Middle Years Program has been authorized since 2017. I would like to extend a special thank you to all the high school leadership team and particularly to Katy Wilson, our IB coordinator.
I thank you very much for your amazing support and wish you all a great weekend.
GO CHIEFS!!!

Uniform Updates
As we welcome more students back to the building next week, we want to start off on the right foot with expectations about uniforms. Students are required to be uniform on in-person school days. The uniform policy can be found on the AL website here.
For anyone who needs assistance with uniform clothes, or if parents have gently used pieces they would like to donate, please contact your school counselor/social worker. We know how fast kids grow, so we want to utilize our uniform closets to help families. PE Uniforms: We will not require PE uniforms in K-5 this year. Students are expected to wear appropriate athletic shoes on their scheduled PE days. For students who sold raffle tickets and earned a raffle t-shirt, those shirts can be worn on the first Tuesday or Thursday of the month, depending on your cohort assignment. We will not be observing the first Friday as a casual day each month- due to the different attendance days. The coming week is a special week in KC, however, so we want to celebrate the Chiefs with a Spirit Week.

Southeast & Bluford branches have kids cafes, where anyone under age 18 can receive a free meal from 3pm-4pm. They may resume when school is back in session. This is put on by Harvester. Check your location or www.KClibrary.org.
Mid-Continent Public Library does have about 200 physical books in French and a large Spanish collection. They have 3 locations that house the majority of those books are at the Antioch, North Independence, and the Grandview locations. You can place them on hold and they can be sent to any Mid-Continent library. KCK library has an abundance of Spanish books, too.

Upper Room After School Care
The Upper Room is offering after school care at the Oak and Cherry Campuses beginning on January 25th for those who have completed the Upper Room registration form on the AL website. If you want after school care and have not completed the form, please go to the website.
Please know that if, after February 5th, we do not have enough students signed up to make it feasible for the Upper Room to continue the program (Oak and Cherry), the program will reluctantly be ended for the present time. This does not mean that we cannot bring it back into the school, but enrollment numbers must be at a minimum of at least 5 at each location for them to feasibly continue offering the program at our school.

ALIHS Incoming 9th & 1oth grade
Dear current 9th and 8th grade parents,
The timeline of enrollment for Académie Lafayette International High School has changed to ensure we have the appropriate staffing and course offering available for our students. As of 2020-2021 the intent to return form is required to be submitted between December 2020 and February 22nd 2021. This will allow your student to participate in choosing their class schedule for the 2021-2022 school year in the spring. It will still be required to complete full re-enrollment during the summer. This requirement and other changes we may implement will continue as we grow our ALIHS student population. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
