Building a Great School Community
Dear AL Families,

As we continue to grow our school, we want to put an emphasis on our community. Académie Lafayette was built by parents to offer a better language education for their children. This tight-knit group laid the foundation for what we currently are.

While we are still experiencing growing pains at times, we are really proud of what we have accomplished over the past 20+ years. When you join Académie Lafayette, you do not just join a school. You join a community, a family. To this end, we would like to strongly encourage every parent, every family, to be fully involved with the school: getting to know teachers and staff, attending PTO events, watching board and PTO meetings online or attending in person, volunteering in the classroom, helping to beautify our buildings as well as actively participating in our fundraising or community building events.

While it can be intimidating to meet new people and step out of your comfort zone, our children deserve the best. Being involved at school is a major known factor in student achievement and building a stronger school community benefits everyone: students, parents, teachers, staff, and administrators.

As our vision and mission state, we want Kansas City children to be active participants in the local and world communities. This starts with you! I encourage you to connect with a new school community member today or sign up to attend or volunteer at a PTO event such as Boo Bayou coming up on Oct. 22.

I look forward to seeing new faces soon.

Have a great weekend.

Come Support the MS Boys Soccer Team
Our season is coming to an end this Saturday and I hope to end it right. With our second consecutive championship on the line, it would be fantastic to pack the stands with AL Families to support our Musketeers.

The boys have worked very hard to get to this point going undefeated in our season and only conceding 4 goals. Our last game ended with a lot of excitement and I look forward to a tough test against Northeast.

  • Wednesday- Decades Day (dress from a past era of your choice)
  • Thursday- Country vs. Country Club (dress in Western or preppy clothing)

Get ready to kick off dance week with your best-themed outfits! Casual day dress code etiquette applies. Email StuCo Sponsor Mme Belcher with any questions, jbelcher@academielafayette.org.
School Messenger: Sign Up to Receive Texts
Our school now utilizes the SchoolMessenger system to deliver text messages, straight to your mobile phone with important information about events, school closings, safety alerts, and more.

You can participate in this free service just by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our school’s short code number, 67587. You can also opt-out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with “Stop”.
Boo Bayou Needs You

MS Girls Basketball Sign-Ups
We are looking for girls interested in joining the AL Middle School basketball team. We plan to have tryouts on Monday, Oct. 24 and Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the Cherry campus. We plan to have both an A and B team, so up to 20 players will have the opportunity to represent our school.

From the coach, M. Piggie: I am really excited to coach this year. I am a father of 3 girls, 2 of which are AL alumni. I played high school basketball, football and ran track and played college football. I have been a part of youth sports for the past 20 years. Basketball to me is about more than dribbling a ball and making a shot. Its concepts tie to life, build character and challenge us to go beyond our comfort zones. This year we will focus on teaching the girls to understand the game of basketball and how the TEAM concept does not just apply to sports, but also applies to school, business and family life in general.

I really look forward to coaching a great group of girls and growing a winning tradition at Académie Lafayette. I can be reached by phone at 816-564-5739 and by email at dmpiggie@gmail.com.

Buy French Books at ALTownSquare

Check out the recently replenished stock of books from Lire C'est Partir, a non-profit French publisher. All the books are $2!

BeautifyAL: Oak Campus Update
Hello Oak Families!

As the end of the 2022 year is approaching, the BeautifyAL Oak Committee is hoping to accomplish one more larger-scale project on the grounds of AL for the year. An outdoor seating conversation set and outdoor dining set were added this summer for the teachers, staff, and parents to enjoy. Currently, there is a green outdoor rug under the outdoor dining set. The committee's goal is to pull the rug and purchase larger-scale paver stones in order to make the space more stable, level, durable and attractive.

A fellow AL parent, who is a landscape architect, has offered to do the labor for free, but funds are still needed for purchasing the paver stones & materials. The BeautifyAL Oak committee is a parent-volunteer and donation-based committee. A RallyUp page has been created for donations to go directly toward the beautification process. If you would like to donate to the BeautifyAL Oak projects, please click here. Your support & generosity are greatly appreciated!

Adopt a Family for the Holidays
The holidays are still two months away but it is never too early to start organizing our annual adopt-a-family program. Please complete this form to let the social workers know how many family members you are willing to adopt. Typically, each family member is given presents or a gift card amounting to $50. In a few weeks, we will follow up with the process for sending gifts or monetary donations. Thank you for supporting our community!
ALIHS Shadowing
The ALIHS staff and students would like to invite 8th graders to visit the high school. Students who sign up will come upstairs to shadow at ALIHS for a couple of hours during the regular school day. Within a week of completing this form, you will receive an email with your assigned shadow day and time as well as information about where to meet. Students will miss several 8th grade classes while shadowing and will be responsible for making up any missed work.

Questions? Contact Liz Seely, LPC, lseely@academielafayette.org.
