AL French Immersion Program News
|
Dear Académie Lafayette Community,
Armour had the pleasure of welcoming the French Ambassador to the United States and his wife in September. He expressed great interest and admiration for our French immersion program. At that time, he let us know that the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs had granted us the Label FrancEducation, an international accreditation for schools offering a rigorous French bilingual education. We are now part of the 584 schools in the world and 64 in the United States that have earned that special recognition.
The Conseil d’Ecole met for the first time this year on Thursday. Topics discussed included transportation, safety and wellness items, as well as student recruitment and better onboarding of new families in regards to immersion education. I look forward to digging into these topics further as the year progresses.
The first parent-teacher conferences of the year will be held next week on Thursday and Friday. I would strongly urge every family to schedule a meeting with the teachers and engage in a productive conversation. Families' active engagement at the school is very critical to students' success.
Have a great weekend.
Elimane Mbengue
Head of School

Are you ready to party? Boo Bayou is tomorrow, Oct. 22 at the Armour campus from 3 to 6 pm. This event is fun for the whole family with games, crafts, treats, activities, and more.
Volunteers are still needed to bring treats for the cake walk, and a few of the activity stations. Shifts are only an hour and help ensure the event is a success. Please sign up if you can help.

MS Girls Basketball Sign-Ups
|
|
We are looking for girls interested in joining the AL Middle School basketball team. We plan to have tryouts on Monday, Oct. 24 and Wednesday, Oct. 26 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the Cherry campus. We plan to have both an A and B team, so up to 20 players will have the opportunity to represent our school.
From the coach, M. Piggie: I am really excited to coach this year. I am a father of 3 girls, 2 of which are AL alumni. I played high school basketball, football and ran track and played college football. I have been a part of youth sports for the past 20 years. Basketball to me is about more than dribbling a ball and making a shot. Its concepts tie to life, build character and challenge us to go beyond our comfort zones. This year we will focus on teaching the girls to understand the game of basketball and how the TEAM concept does not just apply to sports, but also applies to school, business and family life in general.
I really look forward to coaching a great group of girls and growing a winning tradition at Académie Lafayette. I can be reached by phone at 816-564-5739 and by email at dmpiggie@gmail.com.

Armour Parents: Everyone should have received an email from our school counselors and a welcome email from ManageBac, our new IB World School Learning Platform. This is just for the Armour Campus. The welcome email has instructions and a link for logging in to ManageBac for the first time. Please check your spam folder, and if it is missing, please email kwilson@academielafayette.org. You can also access ManageBac from the front page of our website.

Our school now utilizes the SchoolMessenger system to deliver text messages, straight to your mobile phone with important information about events, school closings, safety alerts, and more.
You can participate in this free service just by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our school’s short code number, 67587. You can also opt-out of these messages at any time by simply replying to one of our messages with “Stop”.

Buy French Books at ALTownSquare
|
ALTownsquare is a volunteer-run online bookstore, with the goal of making French language books accessible and affordable for the AL community.
Check out the recently replenished stock of books from Lire C'est Partir, a non-profit French publisher. All the books are $2!
Also featured this fall are book subscriptions from Ecole des Loisirs - receive 8 French books directly from the publisher for under $70 (prices vary by level). Your student will receive the books in their classroom, order now to receive one book a month during the school year, starting in November. (Orders placed after October will still receive all 8 books).

Adopt a Family for the Holidays
|
The holidays are still two months away but it is never too early to start organizing our annual adopt-a-family program. Please complete this form to let the social workers know how many family members you are willing to adopt. Typically, each family member is given presents or a gift card amounting to $50. In a few weeks, we will follow up with the process for sending gifts or monetary donations. Thank you for supporting our community!

|
The ALIHS staff and students would like to invite 8th graders to visit the high school. Students who sign up will come upstairs to shadow at ALIHS for a couple of hours during the regular school day. Within a week of completing this form, you will receive an email with your assigned shadow day and time as well as information about where to meet. Students will miss several 8th grade classes while shadowing and will be responsible for making up any missed work.
