As 2023 comes to a close, we would like to take the opportunity to share a few updates and appreciate the many families who volunteer their time and talents to keep the Oak campus looking its best.
Thanks to a grant award from the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC), BeautifyAL was able to improve the existing butterfly garden on the southwest side of the building (adjacent to the pick-up patio) by installing rock edging & pavers, educational signage, butterfly sculptures by local fabricator Kenny West, and approximately 50 new native plants from Missouri growers. Our Jardin des Papillons will provide flowers in bloom throughout the growing season as well as larval food to support native moth and butterfly species. Some classes have already utilized the space for outdoor learning and our hope is that continues to expand. Additionally, we were able to use grant funds to improve the planter area adjacent to the school’s entrance which was initially created as a rain garden when the building extension was added. With the help of many parent and student volunteers we weeded, added new soil, adjusted the grade, installed butterfly sculptures, and planted nearly 75 water tolerant native plants. We are excited to see how these spaces will look during the spring, summer, and fall months as plants mature and offer both beautification and intentional habitat for pollinators.
You may have also noticed that our outdoor teachers lounge was finished with the help of AL parent Nate King who installed a patio for our table and chairs in February of 2023. We were able to purchase building materials for the patio with RallyUp funds that many families contributed to in 2022. We also used RallyUp funds to buy 1,000 mixed tulip bulbs that were planted around the school marquee along Oak Street and along the east side of the building. Watch for their beautiful blooms next spring!
Lastly, we are immensely grateful to everyone who helps with watering throughout the year and our Adopt-a-Planter families who provide bursts of color and cheer along the steps and walkways. Their creativity and dedication to changing their planters seasonally does not go unnoticed or unappreciated!
Please watch for opportunities to help early next year as we plan to plant along the north-side steps as well as redo the rock garden that was destroyed by a fallen tree limb in October. We’re grateful for your support and excited to see what we can accomplish together in 2024.
