School Updates

Dear AL Families,

Our reopening committee will meet on Monday to once again look at the data and make recommendations for 7th and 8th graders. Those parents will be informed on any decision made on Tuesday, February 9.

The Armour building celebrated its fantastic counselor this week. We're so lucky to have such a passionate staff, family, and student advocate on board. Thank you for all that you do, Mme Seely!

With all of our students being online and/or hybrid, the learning never stops. Because of this, snow days don't have a reason to be. The Student Council requested that the AL administration bring the snow days back. We met virtually and settled on cancelling school the first snow day and doing online learning the subsequent snow days.

As the Chiefs play in the Super Bowl this weekend, we trust that every family whose child will be going to school in person next week will abide by our Healthy Community Social Contract discussed in the 10/31 newsletter

Have a great weekend! GO CHIEFS!

From the cherry principal

Cherry will be celebrating Black History Month with several activities in the coming weeks. Our 4th graders will be taking the lead in reading quotes on the morning announcements from famous African-Americans. In addition, we'll be showing video clips from the History Channel- highlighting their accomplishments.

We are also going to invite parent readers to join us on virtual Wednesdays to read a book to their child's classroom. Specific information will be sent out from individual teachers, but parents can choose a book by an African-American author or a book with an African-American protagonist. For suggestions, see https://kclibrary.org/or check with Mme Sinkhorn, the Cherry librarian, about books available at school. Scholastic or a quick Google search will also yield great ideas.

Finally, we are having a Black History Month "Poster Palooza" for students who want to participate. They can choose a famous African-American (past or present) to make a poster and receive a free book.

Thank you for your support in making this important celebration meaningful to all our students and families.

INFO SHARING

Reminders for a safe arrival and dismissal at Cherry:
  • In the drop-off lane (mornings)- please pull all the way forward and have your child ready to exit the car on the right side as soon as you stop. We have staff to assist, but if your child is old enough to get themselves out of the car-  do not wait for us to open the door.  We are happy to help the little ones. Parents should stay in the car.
  • If your child is not on the bus, in Upper Room, or a walker, you must participate in the car rider line at Cherry. Traffic has been difficult due to occasional road closures on Cherry-  so please be patient and stay in line. If Cherry is closed-  please access from Gillham on the west. We will not be able to accommodate parents who park and walk up on Kenwood.
Thank you for your patience as we help all our students and families get used to our in-person routines.

INFO SHARING

A few quick traffic reminders:
  • If you are dropping off your k-5 student by car, you must use the circle drive. Please practice unbuckling and putting on backpacks/masks at home as all parents should remain inside their vehicle during drop-off and pick-up. If your child needs more time, feel free to find a parking spot and walk them to their designated entrance.
  • If you want to park and walk your child to the correct door, please remember to pick a spot that is not blocking a driveway or in a "no parking" or bus loading zone.
  • Please, do not park and block the corner of 69th Street and Oak. Our buses need the room to maneuver and safely bring students in the building. Please continue around the building to the circle drive to drop-off your student.

Change in Birthday CelebrationsBDay
Dear Families,

We want to make you aware of an important change regarding birthday celebrations for our students. At this time we will not be allowing birthday treats to be sent to school with your child.  Our goal with this decision is to provide the safest possible environment for our students and staff by decreasing the amount of time students are without masks due to eating or drinking.
Thank you for your understanding of our efforts to keep our students and staff healthy and safe.

Oak Uniform Closet Updatecloset

I am the Oak uniform closet organizer. I am working closely with the school admin and social worker on getting you uniforms that you need. Please don't go out and buy them. The uniform closet is currently packed and is a service to any and all families (any campus). Here are some things you need to know:

1) We are over-run by short sleeve polos and sweaters/hoodies. If you think your kid can put up with wearing short sleeves+a sweater this winter than let me pack you a bag and send it home with your kid or drop on your porch! We also have lots of skirts, pants, shorts, and jumpers right now... even some leggings in good shape.

2) We need kid and adult plastic hangers.

3) The nurse and social worker are also requesting donations of underwear (XS, S, M) as well as kid socks.

As always any (non-stained, non-ripped) donations can be dropped off at Oak or leave them on my South Hyde Park front porch in the clear plastic bin. 4235 Kenwood Avenue, Kansas City Missouri 64110. Purplish blue house.

Feel free to direct message me for what you need, (or email or text)! Thank you!

If your student is interested in having a google meet with current 9th graders or coming in person to shadow for a period of the day, please email [email protected].

Dear current 9th and 8th grade parents,
The timeline of enrollment for Académie Lafayette International High School has changed to ensure we have the appropriate staffing and course offering available for our students. As of 2020-2021 the intent to return form is required to be submitted between December 2020 and February 22nd 2021. This will allow your student to participate in choosing their class schedule for the 2021-2022 school year in the spring. It will still be required to complete full re-enrollment during the summer. This requirement and other changes we may implement will continue as we grow our ALIHS student population. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
