School Updates

Dear AL Community,

The Conseil d'Ecole interviewed two candidates, Jennifer Goldman and Stephen Himes, for the parent-elect board member seat on Wednesday. Dr. Goldman has two children at AL (5th and 3rd grade). Dr. Himes is the parent of a first grader. More information will be sent next week about each candidate. We hope that every family takes the time to learn more about each candidate and vote to make their voice heard. Voting will be online from May 7th to May 12th. No paper ballots will be accepted this year because of COVID19.

I would also like to reiterate that the safety of our students, teachers, and staff should be paramount to all our community members. In addition to sending students to school with well-fitting masks, we ask that you do not send your child to school if they exhibit the following symptoms (new or unexplained by other diagnosis):
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Our community's health depends on you! Click here to view our COVID19 cases and quarantine numbers. If your child exhibits even mild illness, they must stay home. Sending a child to school to see if they can "make it through the day" (for example with Tylenol or Ibuprofen in their system), must, without exception, end immediately. Please notify your student's nurse if your child is staying home sick.

Have a great weekend.

Oak Reminders

As most of our students are now back in the building, foot and car traffic around our building has significantly increased. We are asking for your help in following all protocols in place to ensure everyone's safety. All parents dropping off by car should be using the car line. Please use the circle drive and do not drop off your students around the building. Please enter the car line from Oak (from both South and North, please be courteous and take turns) then follow E 69 Street to Cherry to E 69th Terrace into the parking lot circle drive. Please do not enter the car line from Holmes, Oak Terrace, or other side streets.

Parents can park by the school and walk their children to their assigned entrance. All Kindergarteners, 3rd, and 5th graders should use the main entrance by the circle drive. All 1st, 2nd, and 4th graders should use the southwest patio door on the Oak Street side of the building. That door locks at 8:06 am, students arriving after 8:06 should use the main entrance. Entrance B by the playground on E 69th street is reserved for bus riders, do not stop to drop off your car rider there.

Thank you for doing your part to keep all of our students and staff safe!

Dear parents,

Please take advantage of the uniform closet! If you have anything clean and not ripped or stained to donate please send it with your child to be dropped in the school office. Donations can also be dropped in the clear plastic bin on my front porch: 4235 Kenwood Avenue.

I am a parent volunteer and organize the Oak closet (which is quite full right now) so if you have any particular needs (Cherry or Oak) I'm happy to look for you, sizes K-5. Contact sallyk1975@gmail.com, 816-699-3109.

For 6th grade and up uniform needs, please contact Diane Rizzo who handles Armour.
816-729-7087, diane.rizzo@yahoo.com.

Please be as specific as possible as to what you're wanting (size, color) and we will try to pack you a bag. If your child is at Oak on Thursdays let me know and I will deliver it to your child directly.

Here to help!

Sally King and Diane Rizzo

Picture day make-up will be on Monday 4/26 from 1 pm to 3 pm for Cherry Campus students only. Online students can also come to Cherry at that time if you want their picture taken this year.

In order to improve school communication, we have enabled the text feature of our SchoolReach technology. Every family should have received a text as shown here this week. You must respond Y to the text message in order to opt-in and receive further communication. If you did not receive a text, please make sure your contact information is correct in your Tyler parent portal. If it is, please email itdepartment@academielafayette.org

Current AL families (pre-k to 9th grade) please watch for an email message next week to notify you of Summer School registration/enrollment opening in the Tyler portal.

If any family has not yet signed-in to Tyler, they will not be able to complete enrollment.
If you have not yet signed in and set up your account please contact itdepartment@academielafayette.org for a temporary password.

Incoming students will receive a separate email notification when registration in Tyler is available.

The Diversity Committee's next parent discussion will take place on Apr. 29 from 6:00-7:00 pm and will focus on the recent Kansas City's Star series being transparent about their own racist history.   Parents who have signed up for previous sessions will continue to receive the Zoom link for our next discussion. But any new parents interested in participating, please RSVP here .

Children's Mercy Forum in EspañolMercy

Missouri Charter Public School Association will have a forum for parents in Español with Children's Mercy on Tuesday, April 27, 5-6pm. Nationwide, information and open conversations with physicians about the COVID-19 vaccine in Spanish have been limited, so providing this opportunity for our families and our Spanish speaking communities means a lot.
See flyer below for details.

We're encouraging parents to register here:
(and by doing so they enter a chance to win a prize!)

This event will be streamed live on our MCPSA facebook account as well: https://www.facebook.com/mocharterschools

Teacher Appreciation Weekappreciation

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7, and the PTO is sharing some fun ideas to show our wonderful teachers just how much we appreciate all that they do. Times remain challenging, so these suggestions emphasize heartfelt gratitude instead of purchasing gifts or cards.
  • Monday, May 3: Bring your homeroom teacher a homemade card from your child.
  • Tuesday, May 4: Share a nice note, email or handmade card with the support teachers your child has for class that day. If each family shares appreciation with the support teachers they have that day, all should be represented.
  • Wednesday, May 5: Email a letter of gratitude from you, the parent. Don't forget your support teachers. If you are unsure of a teacher's email address, all email addresses are the teacher's first initial, last name @academielafayette.org. You can also use the staff directories for each campus to send an email directly from the website: Oak - Cherry - Armour.
  • Thursday, May 6: Share a video of gratitude.
  • Friday, May 7: Free for all - flowers, a small gift, a nice letter, whatever is in your heart!
These are just suggestions; please show your appreciation in the ways that work best for your family. Feel free to explore ideas online (Pinterest is full of inspiration). Also, this is a great time to remember the office personnel and campus principals. Thank you for making our teachers feel special and appreciated!

Special PTO MeetingptoMeeting
