Our Gratitude for a Remarkable School Year
|
Dear AL Community,
Another school year flew by, and we are so glad to be back to relative normalcy two years later. This last quarter has been extremely busy and successful. Here are a few of the many events that happened: several sports championships, MAP and NWEA testing, STEAM night, Evening in Paris, Musketeer March, a new board member elected, the 7th-grade trip to France, and more! We just had a lot of fun this month.
The Académie Lafayette International High School held its first pep rally on Wednesday. Gilbert le Renard (Gilbert the Fox) was voted as the official ALIHS mascot by students and staff. You can see event pictures on our Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as the Journalism Instagram page.
Our last big event will be our eighth-grade graduation on Monday evening. It will be streamed live on our YouTube channel. Congratulations to the 8th-grade class of 2022!
Summer school planning is in its final stages and detailed information will be sent out next week to participating families. We cannot wait to see you there!
Merci beaucoup to the PTO, all the parents, grandparents, and community members who supported the school by donating generously, volunteering their time, sharing their expertise, and hosting interns this year.
I wish everyone a restful and fun summer.

Reminders:
- If your student has two or more COVID symptoms they are required to get a PCR test or a doctor’s note with an alternative diagnosis before returning to school.
- If your student has a positive test please notify the campus nurse within 24 hours.
- With the approval of the Kansas City Health Department, we are no longer contact tracing individual cases of COVID within our buildings, though this may change in the event of a cluster of cases. In the event of an exposure, a class or cohort notice will be sent so that families can watch for possible symptom development.
Click here to read the safety guidelines and view our dashboard. Our dashboard shows our number of cases, quarantines, and vaccinated contact by campus. The dashboard is updated at the end of every week. You can upload your child's covid-19 vaccine records here. Covid-19 testing at school: Click here and click here for more information.

Third Language Choices for Incoming 6th Graders
|
It is time for your incoming sixth-grade student to choose their third language class for middle school. Your student will take either Mandarin or Spanish three days a week throughout middle school. They will also continue their study of the language at Académie Lafayette International High School. When your student visited the Armour campus, they viewed a presentation by our Spanish and Mandarin teachers. Hopefully, this helps them make an informed decision. We will do our best to honor each student's first choice.

Host Families Needed for 22-23
|
Host families open their homes and welcome an AL intern for a semester or for a year. They provide a private bedroom and meals when you are together as a family. The school provides a generous monthly stipend to the intern and a monthly city bus pass. Hosting an intern is a great way for your children to speak French at home, discover more about francophone culture, and have someone to visit when your family goes to France in the future!

Bonjour! On Monday, May 23, and Tuesday, May 24, some free, weeded books from the Oak library will be available at arrival and at pickup on the patio.
What is weeding? This is when librarians remove books from the collection. Why do librarians weed? The American Library Association writes that: "Annually, the school librarian will conduct an inventory of the school library collection and equipment. The inventory can be used to determine losses and remove damaged or worn materials which can then be considered for replacement. The inventory can also be used to deselect and remove materials that are no longer relevant to the curriculum or of interest to students. Additionally, school librarians should develop a collection maintenance plan that includes systematic inspection of materials that would result in weeding outdated, damaged, or irrelevant materials from the collection."
In Oak's case as well, there will be some books available that are geared towards older readers, left over from when the middle school was also a part of our building.
