KC Metro Conference ChampionshipChamps

Dear AL Community,

Congratulations to our athletes and coaches for the brilliant results at the KC Metro Conference Championship! (Photos by AL parent Marco Wirz) Despite the short season, everyone gave it their all. The results speak for themselves.  Special thanks to athletic director Mamadou Dieng, head coach Brenda Kumm, assistant coach Dan Bird, specialty coaches Abdoulaye Sy, Denise Hill and Ida Lee. Merci beaucoup to all the high school mentors.

As we enter the last week of the 20-21 school year, please make sure to finish strong! We look forward to seeing you for summer school starting June 16 as an opportunity to support all students in a fun atmosphere. If you plan to attend summer school please make sure to complete your registration in the Tyler system here: https://sdm.sisk12.com/MOAL360x3/login before May 26th.

Have a great weekend!

From the Oak and Cherry Principal

Welcome New Students and Parents!

We will have a virtual Parent Orientation Night on June 7, 6 pm for Cherry families and 7 pm for Oak families. These events will be live on Zoom and the link will be provided at a later date.

Please plan to join us online to be introduced to key people at each building and to hear more about the following topics: Covid and health/safety, kindergarten readiness, first days of school, arrival and dismissal, and transportation.

We will save time at the end to respond to questions.  We will include a link in the newsletter next week for parents to submit questions in advance.

In addition, for new families who have never had the opportunity to tour the school, we will be sending out a sign-up genius to reserve a time slot to come see the buildings.  Those visits will take place June 8-14. Those visits will not be formal tours, but they will give parents and kids the chance to take a look around and see a kindergarten classroom before summer school starts.

Thank you so much. We look forward to meeting our new parents and to welcoming our new kindergarten students to the building in person on June 16 when summer school starts.

High school orientation will take place at the beginning of August. Communication with more specific information will be sent this summer.

Cordially,

Jean-Claude Diatta                         Heather Royce
Oak Principal                                  Cherry Principal

No Charge for Meals 20/21 School Yearmeals

The AL Business Office has recently learned that as part of the Federal Covid Relief Package, we are able to provide free meals to all students, regardless of financial status, from October 2020 - June 2021. What does this mean?
  • No one will be charged for meals eaten October 1- June 30.
  • All meals eaten for the rest of this school year and session I of summer school will be tracked but nothing will be charged.
  • Meals eaten between November 1 - May 13 will be credited back to your child's account.  We are still working on the best way to do this so credits will take place in the coming weeks.
  • Any balance from previous years will be carried over to next school year.
  • Any payments made for summer lunch this year will be carried over to next school year.
  • If you have a balance due (negative balance) carried over from previous years we encourage you to continue paying that. The lunch payment button will continue to be on the AL website for this purpose.
  • If you did make a payment this year, do not have a balance due, and would like a refund, please contact Marcia Berry as soon as possible before the end of May, otherwise everything will carry over to next year.
Please direct any questions to Marcia Berry at [email protected].
Thanks for your understanding.

8th Grade Graduation Party to celebrate!Party

Hi 8th grade parents!  This is Dan, I'm an AL parent to 8th grader Maja (as well as alumnus Tristan, AL '18).  As we near the end of our Academie Lafayette journey, we're having an 8th Grade Graduation Party to celebrate!  We have some safety precautions with Covid, but it will still be a fun and memorable celebration of all of your amazing kids, I'm sure.
Who:  Families of current 8th graders (who ever attended AL)
When:  Friday, 28 May, 5-10pm (rain or shine)
Where:  Swope Park Bandstand
Bring:  All food and drink for your family, folding chairs, yard games, and smiles :)

Details: The Swope Park Bandstand is on Pavilion Rd in Swope Park (enter at Meyer Blvd), near Starlight and AL's league XC course.  Please note Google maps shows it as "Swope Park Shelter #3", but kcparks.com calls it "Swope Park Bandstand", and lists another shelter as #3.  It has 20 tables seating 200, and sheltered capacity of 400.  There is electricity, lights, a water spigot, playground, and portapotties.

Just to reiterate... because of covid, NO food/drink will be provided.  This is picnic style, please bring all food and drink for your family.  Currently masks are required at Swope when not eating or drinking, and families should plan to social distance.

Contributions welcome!  Even $10/family will help make a fun party even more fun.  We already have enough for the shelter rental and music by DJ Darron Story (father of Josh, AL '21, and Zach, AL '18... thanks again, Darron!).  If possible, we'd love to add a photobooth and more!  The go fund me link is below:

Amazing AL AdvocatesAmazing

View the Advocacy in Action communication here. This one marks the end of the 2021 legislative session and wraps up our Funding Equity campaign. You have been incredibly supportive of our kids and their education. Without you, we wouldn't have gotten this far!
Collectively, our outreach to our legislators was outstanding! Through our Phone 2 Action tool, we had 1,688 legislator connections and that doesn't include all the advocacy done outside of the tool, which we know was even greater.
Thank you!

Greetings Académie Lafayette Parents,

Upper Room is happy to announce that we will be providing after-school care for Académie Lafayette's two summer school sessions: June 16 - July 2, 2021 and July 7 - July 23, 2021.

The program will run from the end of the school day until 6:00pm Monday through Friday.  Activities will include music, art, PE and games.  Due to this being a separate program from our school year after-school program, all families will need to complete an application, pay a $25 registration fee through PayPal, and complete and submit the automatic payment form even if you have completed an application earlier in the school year.  Fees will be a flat rate of $60 per week for the first child and $45 per week for each sibling.  Click here for additional information about the Summer After-school Program.
