from the head of school
Dear AL Community,
We are a Community - in every sense of the word!
We've asked for a lot from our students, parents and teachers this year, and especially these past two months. And while we have asked a lot from ourselves as well, I want to remind you to continue to ask us for what you need.
Importantly, I don't want anyone to hesitate to reach out to our social workers if you need help. We are raising money and dedicating resources to helping our families impacted by the pandemic and we are committed to doing this to the extent that is possible.
We also continue to ask more of people through giving, as we are continually working to raise money to help our community. If you're able, join our EIP online auction tomorrow and bid on some of the amazing items donated from the Kansas City and AL community, or simply donate to our Fund-A-Need which will go towards the Académie Lafayette Families Fund. We know the demand on food banks and other community resources continue to increase and our Families Fund is an effort to help our school provide for our families in need. Consider making a donation to help us get to the finish line. Saturday is crucial in helping us meet the goal of supporting our school and families.
On behalf of all our staff, I would like to say Merci Beaucoup to the Liberda family, owner of the Waldo Thai Place, for generously showing their appreciation of our teachers with a delicious meal.
Thank you all so much for your support; your efforts will make a difference and your support helps create a strong and vital community.
Elimane Mbengue

EIP 2020 Online
Tomorrow our biggest event of the year, Evening In Paris, is going online. Historically, this event has been a chance for members of the Académie Lafayette family to gather together and raise a glass as we raised money for the school.
This year is different.
Academie Lafayette has moved to online learning, hugs and handshakes are a thing of the past and our families are struggling. In our 20 years, AL has never wavered in our commitment to our community. As we move through this, we will continue to deliver the best education to each student that steps through our doors.
While EIP will have a much different feel this year, the mission is still the same; to educate the children of Kansas City to become globally minded, locally active, critical thinkers through immersion in world languages and cultures. So if you are able, consider joining us online and making a donation to help us get to the finish line. Saturday is crucial in helping us meet the goal of supporting our school and families. .
We're excited to invite each and every one of you to join us for EIP virtually this year on May 9, from the comfort of your home, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Live Auction 6 pm-8 pm
All donations to this year's Fund A Need at EIP will go toward the Académie Lafayette Families
GoFundMe which is an effort to help our school provide for our families in need.
Check the EIP Facebook Page

The intent to return form sent to incoming 9th graders is considered as the application to the AL high school.

Grading Practices during Covid-19
We want to communicate clearly our grading policy for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. We have monitored what other schools/districts are doing and listened to feedback from staff and parents.
Our goal with grades during this time is to keep parents informed of their child's progress and to keep students motivated to work till the end, while not penalizing families who are struggling at this time.
To that end, we will adopt a "hold harmless" approach. Grades will be set where they were at the end of Trimester 2, so students can maintain that grade or improve their grade/ level of proficiency if they demonstrate progress. We expect students to be consistently engaged in learning, and teachers will continue to assess student work and communicate with parents. If you have questions about grades, please contact your child's teacher directly.
Thank you for your partnership during this challenging time.

Host a French Intern for the 20-21 School Year
Would your family consider hosting
an intern for the upcoming school year?
Académie Lafayette, French Immersion Charter School, is pleased to announce that we will again be welcoming interns for the 2020-21 school year. However, we still need host families. This year AL will save approximately $260,000 by using the intern program. If you are able to welcome an intern into your home, it's almost like you're donating $20,000!
Interns are university students from French speaking countries who spend a year working in the classrooms of our youngest students. Host families open their homes and welcome an intern for a semester or for a year. They provide a private
bedroom and meals when you are together as a family. The school provides a generous monthly stipend to the intern and a monthly city bus pass.
Hosting an intern is a great way for your children to speak French at home, to discover more about francophone culture, and to have someone to visit when your family goes to France in the future!
If you would like more information about hosting, please contact Diane Balagna, intern coordinator at Académie Lafayette, at 816-888 7400 or
[email protected].
