From the HEad of School

Great Start to the 21-22 School Year!

Dear AL Community,

We are writing to update you on the work of our Covid Task Force and to inform parents of important procedures and changes for this school year. Please know that our task force is still meeting regularly to look at data, trends and best practices and to monitor our plan and its implementation. The task force is made up of board members, parents, administration, health care professionals, our school nurses, teachers, and counselors. We want to reiterate our firm belief that kids, in general, learn best in person and that our nation's health care professionals support this position on in-person learning.

Our main focus is to provide an effective instruction while protecting the health and safety of our whole school community with the mitigation strategies (handwashing, cohorting, physical distancing) outlined in our plan.  As we learn more from our health care partners and the KC Health Department, we are updating and improving our procedures. To that end, we have made changes to how we organize lunch in order to maximize distance between students while unmasked. In addition, we will be implementing a testing program for any unvaccinated staff members and for students whose parents choose for them to participate. More information to follow.

We want to be clear about how we will communicate confirmed cases of Covid-19. Individual classrooms impacted will receive notification (a general notice to all parents), and specific information to students who are considered a "close contact." We will not send all-school notices, but new cases will be posted on our website dashboard- to be updated daily. Please know that we will not share identifying information, specific classrooms, or grade levels with parents of students who are not impacted.

We will work with families to help those students required by their physician or the school to quarantine so they can continue learning at home. Students will remain with their homeroom teacher (K-5), and that teacher will utilize Google Classroom to post content and assignments and will check in "live" regularly with quarantining students at a designated time. Middle school and high school students will keep their regular schedule and use Google Classroom Meet links to attend their classes virtually. Click here to read the Armour virtual student guidelines. We kindly ask that parents refrain from engaging with teachers during online instruction. Please email the teacher directly if you would like to set up a time to discuss questions or concerns.

To keep our school community safe, we need the help of all our families. Here's what you can do:
  1. Make sure to send your child to school with a mask (and a spare). Emphasize the importance of proper masking.
  2. Keep your student home if she/he is sick and while you await covid test results.
  3. Inform the school nurse of confirmed cases.
  4. Call the principal or nurse if you have any questions.
  5. Please refrain from speculation or spreading misinformation or confidential information via social media.
Thank you for your support and flexibility.
Have a great weekend!

Cherry Student Success Night

Hello Cherry Families! We are looking forward to seeing you online for Student Success Night on September 1. This is a time for teachers to share information with parents about curriculum, classroom expectations, schedules, and more!  Remember it will be virtual again this year. Please look for Meet links to be shared by your child's homeroom teacher.

We will have 2 identical sessions- to allow for families with multiple kids to see at least 2 teachers. Session #1 will be at 6:00 and Session #2 will be at 6:45. Each session will include a presentation by the teacher and time for Q & A. English and Specials teachers are recording a short video that will be shared by the homeroom teacher.

We look forward to connecting with you on September 1st.

Masking GuidelinesMasking

According to the CDC's COVID-19 k-12 guidance, proper masking is crucial to keep kids in school. This is the case now more than ever with the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 delta variant cases in Kansas City. We are asking all parents to join us in encouraging proper mask wearing, as well as provide a clean and proper fitting mask for their students each day. A properly fitting mask should cover the nose, mouth and chin; It should not gape on the sides, and should remain on the bridge of the nose at all times, even when the wearer is speaking. Students should change masks daily if possible, but should not be worn for longer than 2-3 days without washing. If a mask is visibly soiled, has tears or holes, or has a vent or valve it will be placed in the students backpack and a paper mask will be supplied to the child to complete the school day.

Our school nursing team is working closely with teachers and administration to identify where improvements can be made for the safety of our students, and we will be contacting parents of students who have been identified as having concerns with consistent masking or poorly fitting masks.

Click here for the CDC guidance on masking.
