Message
from
EVC Simmons
I hope that you were able to enjoy a happy and healthy holiday weekend and to spend time (even if remotely) with your friends and loved ones.
Independence Day offers an opportunity to reflect on the complexities of our shared history, as well as our common path forward. Here at UC San Diego, our urgent work on addressing structural racism will require leveraging the university’s
Strategic Plan for Inclusive Excellence
and
best practices
during the coming months. The divisional deans and other leaders within Academic Affairs have started discussing with VC-EDI Becky Petitt how schools, divisions, colleges, and administrative units might incorporate additional anti-racism efforts into existing unit-level EDI strategic plans. A variety of relevant resources and consultation options available to individuals and units through the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are outlined below.
On July 6th, the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) issued a
temporary final rule
for fall 2020 that no longer allows international students in the US to take a full load of remote or online courses. Chancellor Khosla's
July 7th letter to the campus
emphasized that UC San Diego is committed to supporting our international students and enabling them to make timely progress toward their degrees. Our Senate, Administration, students, faculty, and staff actively have collaborated this year to ensure there will be sufficient remote courses available to meet the needs of international students who cannot be on campus in person this fall. Likewise, we are now establishing a broad-based Fall International Education Collaboration to arrange for every in-country international student to be able to take an in-person course and satisfy the revised SEVP rule. Further updates will follow soon.
While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to present evolving challenges, by working together, we can help ensure the health and safety of our community as we prepare for an incremental return to campus. Your continued flexibility, patience, understanding, and collaboration remain paramount during these uncertain times.
For the safety of our entire campus community, employees who have been working remotely should continue to work remotely until further notice.
Several task forces with staff, student, and faculty representatives are developing comprehensive protocols for in-person work on campus, and divisional deans will be asked to provide plans specific to their units consistent with public health regulations.
We encourage you to review the
Fall 2020 Plan
and
campus safety regulations
for details, and
be sure to check out the guidance for
research
and
non-research units
for more information.
Thank you, again, for all you are doing to support the UC San Diego community.

Deadline extended to withdraw from Summer 2020 courses
The
Academic Senate recently approved
extending the deadlines for undergraduate students who wish to withdraw from summer session courses. The extension gives students more time to adjust to the pace and format of remote summer courses before deciding whether to remain enrolled.
Students should be strongly encouraged to consult with their advisors before making any changes to their summer course plans.
The new deadlines to drop a course for a ‘W’ grade are as follows:
- Summer Session I: July 28
- Summer Session II: September 1
- Special Sessions: Date when 90% of course is completed (end of Week 9 for 10-week sessions)

New guidelines from U.S. Student & Exchange Visitor Program
Below, please find a list of upcoming webinars hosted by ISPO to address questions and concerns regarding recent ICE guidance:

Stop the spread. Wear a mask.
After analyzing the transmission pathways of COVID-19, UC San Diego scientists have confirmed that proper use of face coverings significantly reduces the number and severity of infections. Please wear a cloth face cover over your mouth and nose whenever you go out in public, including on campus.

Creating a culture of care
Faculty and staff play a crucial role in creating a community of care at UC San Diego by identifying and assisting students who show signs of emotional, physical, or psychological distress. The training program
Creating a Culture of Care: Supporting Students in Distress
is available through the UC Learning Center to help faculty and staff in recognizing signs of distress and facilitate a student-centered response. Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) also offers this training as a group workshop. Units are encouraged to contact
Dr. Mary Anderson
to request a training session tailored to fit the needs of the department.

Beyond the webinar
With COVID-19 and the transition to working remotely, it has not been business as usual, especially for event planners. Check out this interactive video from Special Events and Protocol and UC San Diego Events Council for ideas you can incorporate into the plans for your next virtual event.
