Dear Colleagues,
As we near the end of the fall quarter and the calendar year, you may be feeling anything from joy, accomplishment or anticipation to stress or exhaustion. No matter where you are right now, I hope that during this winter break you will be able to rest, rejuvenate and take time with treasured friends or family. Your well-being is important and deserves attention. Thank you for your continued work as part of the UC San Diego community to support our inclusive public mission providing the knowledge, education, and hope that transforms lives.
At this time of year many of us seek ways to help those who are coping with difficult situations, so that the new year can be better for everyone. Donating time, items or money to help others is a wonderful expression of communal goodwill. If you have a desire to donate and don’t already have an organization in mind, the Basic Needs Hub is a great resource for vulnerable students in our campus community. You can contact them here at or send a gift here.
Wishing you a joyful, peace-filled holiday break,
Elizabeth H. Simmons

Honest and Purposeful Communication
I appreciate it when people let me know about university processes or operations that are not as helpful or timely as they should be – and I try to remember to express this in the moment. It takes courage to bring up disappointing news, especially if you fear this may be interpreted as assigning blame or causing trouble for a colleague.

Academic Support Model Task Force Being Formed
At the November 28 Representative Assembly meeting it was announced that a new task force is being formed to advise on an Academic Support Model (ASM) that is simpler and more transparent, connects revenue and expense, incentivizes activities aligned with the strategic plan, reflects the all-funds financial landscape, and respects core-funding constraints. The task force is being created in consultation with the Academic Senate Committee on Committees. Multiple listening sessions with leaders and financial experts from the Senate and from General Campus academic units are informing the plans. The task force’s work will build upon ideas generated during the listening sessions and will focus on gathering broad input to identify the strengths and challenges of several potential budget models that will be provided to the task force by Academic Affairs. The task force is expected to report out in Spring 2024.
