Message from EVC Simmons

Dear Colleagues,

As this academic year draws to a close, I want to express my deep appreciation for each of you and all of the different ways you KeptTeaching and KeptEngaging with our students. The combination of your smallest and your most monumental actions for so many is what has kept UC San Diego going strong during the pandemic.

As one person commented in a recent Campus Operations Group meeting, we’ve returned to learn and now we’re preparing for what comes next. This is not to say the vigilance of campus personnel or our researchers will wane. We will continue to follow the science and make decisions that continue to support a safe university community. Yet, I cannot convey strongly enough how impressive it has been to be a part of our campus pulling together to weather this public health crisis, with dedication to keeping each other safe. I encourage you to continue to follow the latest masking and testing guidance throughout the summer, particularly as you attend large group events or are in other situations that might increase transmission levels. We trust you to keep yourself, and your fellow Tritons, safe.

Over the summer, many of our Collective Impact projects will be continuing, and there are several very exciting happenings to anticipate for the fall.  Construction of the Epstein Family Amphitheater is well underway, with the expectation of its inaugural season beginning in October. Likewise, the re-opening of a revitalized Mandeville Art Gallery (with a newly hired Director) will happen a bit later during the fall.  With these openings, following closely on the spring launch of UC San Diego at Park & Market, many eyes will be focused on UC San Diego as a rising destination for arts, culture, and entertainment.  Our campus  Art Strategy will continue to develop as a close partnership between Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, University Advancement, academic departments, registered student organizations, and community partners. Stay tuned for further updates as new efforts continue to come to fruition.

Wishing you an enjoyable and refreshing summer!

SAGE Research Articles Can Now Be Made Available for Free Through the Year 2024

Earlier this week, the University of California and SAGE Publishing announced an agreement to expand open access publishing opportunities for researchers at all 10 UC campuses. Running through 2024, the agreement will provide funding for UC researchers to make their SAGE research articles free and openly available to the world. SAGE is one of the largest publishers of UC research in the social sciences and humanities. Under the agreement, the UC Libraries will contribute $1,000 to all article publishing fees (APCs) and will cover the costs in full where there is no available grant funding to pay the remainder of the APC, or when the APC is less than $1,000. UC authors will also receive a discount on open access publishing in SAGE journals. The agreement covers all hybrid journals via SAGE Choice and most of SAGE’s fully ‘gold’ open access journals. The agreement also includes significantly expanding access to all journals in SAGE’s 2022 Premier Journals Package. For more details, visit the UC San Diego Library website.

CloudBank Access Available to PIs with Active CISE Awards

Collective Impact Highlight

How will Collective Impact work be organized at UC San Diego?

As we move toward using a Collective Impact approach to close opportunity gaps at UC San Diego, the next phase of our work requires us to coordinate mutually-reinforcing activities for maximum impact. To do that, between five and seven different thematic areas each for faculty, staff, and students have been identified as areas where these gaps are most prominent, or where closing gaps would make the biggest positive impact for our community. Would you like to read more about these themes or explore the literature supporting the choice of these themes as areas of focus for CI work? Visit our website to see the Themes and Work Groups for Collective Impact at UC San Diego.

ESR Finance Systems Update: From Stabilization to Optimization

Two years ago, UC San Diego implemented our new finance systems during a stressful pandemic. While our systems are now functioning as intended, the campus community is still adjusting to this new way of operating. In our recent quarterly survey of Oracle users and faculty/researchers, we heard resoundingly that while there has been slight progress in the majority of areas, overall this stabilization period has taken too long and caused an immense amount of frustration. Apologies are offered for the pain and instability caused by this delayed stabilization period. In order to address ongoing concerns, Financial Management plans to transition into the next phase focused on process and system optimization. To learn more about the support strategy, please visit the Financial Management website.

What's the Business Analytics Hub?

analytics_computer.jpg

The Business Analytics Hub (BAH) contains lists of analytics and reports that use data from one or more Activity Hubs or reports created from sources such as Oracle Financials Cloud and UCPath, among others, including systems that include student-related data. On BAH, one can find analytics and reports listed by area, request access to view the data, suggest new or enhanced analytics reports and submit questions to Subject Matter Experts.

In the development of the BAH, feedback was obtained from a cross section of the campus community to provide input on what should be contained on the website and how things should be laid out. One of the important features was for the BAH to align with our data governance structure and allow those that oversee a particular data domain to have direct access to add and update the reports that are contained in each section. The following units manage each section of the website directly in the campus Web Content Management System:

  • Research: OCGA
  • Student: Registrar Office
  • HR/Payroll: People-Data Systems and Processes
  • Finance: BFS

Visit the BAH to see if the report you need is already available, or submit a request for a new report from those who oversee the data.
