Dear Colleagues,

As we continue navigating many changes and evolving challenges, I want to affirm an unwavering commitment to the mission of our university and to research, innovation, teaching and learning. I hope you will find solidarity and encouragement in our mutual purpose as a campus community. During this time, collaboration, shared governance, and a unified vision are essential to our success.

You can stay connected and informed through the many resources available. For instance, the Chancellor’s recent early April message has thoroughly outlined many key updates including financial impacts, grant distributions, and specific actions the university has taken in recent weeks.

There are also several UC and UC San Diego websites that provide ongoing updates on important topics including research funding, student financial aid, immigration, and health care:

Additionally, we each have the opportunity to take action to advocate for our university and what we believe in:

  • Learn about and participate in the Behind Every Breakthrough campaign, a university wide effort communicating the value of research to internal and external constituencies. Connect with your unit’s media contact if you would like to participate and highlight your research.
  • Join the UC Advocacy Network and help protect life-saving research by contacting your representatives
  • Use this NIH Cuts Advocacy Toolkit to raise awareness on your social media and share your story about the impact of NIH-funded research. You can also invite others to join the campaign.
  • Connect with your professional associations and discipline-specific societies for other resources, advocacy opportunities, and ways to support junior members of your profession.
  • Share any media inquiries you receive with your unit’s media contact or send them to marcom@ucsd.edu if you’re unsure of who to share the information within your area.

I’ve also found reading about our recent technical and creative breakthroughs in our campus news to be an inspiring reminder that even now, our university continues to deliver life-changing discoveries that will cure diseases, solve global challenges, build community, deepen cultural connections, and shape the future.

I hope we can work together with resilience and optimism, that we can seek out support when we need it and provide support to our colleagues by advancing and advocating for our shared mission. Please continue sharing any ideas you may have for how we can further sustain each other during these times of unprecedented challenges. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to our educational and scholarly community.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth H. Simmons

Please submit a proposal form and accompanying budget for an online/hybrid course development project. The maximum award per course project will be $45K.

UC Mandated Training Single Sign-On Alerts

As a reminder, all Academic Affairs faculty and staff (except student staff) will now receive alerts when they log into Single Sign-On (SSO) if they have any outstanding training to complete in UC Learning.

With this alert launch, faculty and staff will receive the following messages:

UC Mandated training is due in 14 days:

A reminder will appear in Single Sign On, with the due date and training identified. There will be an option to either go to the UC Learning Center to complete the training or bypass the message and login through SSO. The message will continue to appear at each login until training is complete.

UC Mandated Training is overdue by 30 days or more:

If an employee is within one of the two annual lockout periods —designed to minimize disruptions to instructional operations—and is more than 30 days overdue in completing required training, they will encounter an intercept screen. This screen will restrict access to all systems except UC Learning, where they can complete their overdue training.

You are encouraged to complete any overdue training to prepare for this important change.

If you have any questions, please contact Leo Munduruca at lmunduruca@ucsd.edu

Secure Connect Update: Cybersecurity Awareness Training Enforcement

As part of the Secure Connect program, all faculty, staff, and student employees must complete the required Cybersecurity Awareness Training to maintain system access using campus Single Sign-On (SSO) authentication. The training itself takes approximately 35 minutes and is available on-demand online.

Compliance Enforcement Begins: Monday, April 14, 2025

To remain compliant and maintain access to any system requiring Single Sign-On, please review the following:

  • If your training is more than 30 days past due → Your access will be denied until you complete the training. A link to the training will be provided when attempting to login via SSO.
  • If your training is less than 30 days past due → You will receive messaging to complete the training before your access to the system is denied due to non-compliance.
  • Avoid access disruptions by completing your training before your due date each year.

Important Note for Health Science Users:

Access to clinical applications will not be impacted unless using campus Single Sign-On.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE: Triton CORE, UC San Diego’s Mobile Compassionate Response Team

Have you ever had a student in your office who seemed visibly distressed? Or received an email from a student expressing emotional struggles? There’s a team you can turn to for support.

Triton CORE, a Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) Program, is a team of licensed mental health professionals who can meet with students experiencing a behavioral health crisis anywhere on campus. Whether students are dealing with thoughts of harming themselves or others, significant changes in behavior (like isolation, neglecting basic needs, or a sudden drop in grades/class attendance), or emotional distress, Triton CORE can provide support.

The student also has the option of meeting with clinicians at CAPS Urgent Care (Galbraith Hall, RM 190) from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. If the student is unable to utilize that as a resource, Triton CORE can provide immediate, on-campus support, including a comprehensive mental health evaluation, safety planning, and coordination of care. The team offers a person-centered, trauma-informed approach, focusing on understanding each student’s unique mental health, case management, and cultural needs. If necessary, Triton CORE can also transport students to a higher level of care, such as an emergency department or crisis stabilization unit.

HOW TO REACH THEM:

Triton CORE is available Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. To contact the team, call UC San Diego Police Department’s (UCPD) non-emergency line at 858-534-HELP (4357), and ask to speak with Triton CORE.

TO LEARN MORE: Visit the Triton CORE website

You can schedule an outreach presentation from the TRITON CORE team to learn more about their services and how they can assist your students. Email tritoncore@ucsd.edu
