Message from EVC Simmons

Dear Colleagues,

This has been an incredibly stressful time for everyone on campus.

We are united as a university in respecting the rights of represented employees to bargain collectively on the terms and conditions of employment, as well as to choose whether or not to participate in strike activities.

Nevertheless, the tension throughout UC San Diego during this week’s strike has been palpable. Staff, faculty, students, and other community members from every corner of the campus and every discipline have been impacted. Even just awaiting the outcome of the ongoing systemwide contract negotiations between the UC Office of the President and the UAW is creating a sense of suspense.

It is my hope that resolution between the UC and the UAW will be achieved expeditiously.

In the meantime, it is important for everyone to know where to find accurate information, resources, and sources of support. Here are a few items that I wanted to bring to your attention:

Your patience, flexibility and compassion, as you are dealing with the many ramifications of this complicated situation, are sincerely appreciated.

I wish you a refreshing weekend and a relaxing fall holiday break.

With best regards,

Elizabeth H. Simmons

Flu Vaccination and Attestation Reminder

The most important measure to prevent flu infection is an annual flu vaccination, and it is even more important when respiratory viruses are common in the community. All students, faculty, staff and other academic appointees should have received or affirmatively declined an influenza vaccination by Nov. 18 to comply with the University of California Policy on Vaccination Programs.

Employees who have not already done so are encouraged to get the flu shot through their primary care provider or through a local pharmacy. For those who need access, you can self-schedule a flu vaccine appointment at a UC San Diego Health location at flu.ucsd.edu. They should then document that they received the flu vaccination or submit their declination (self-reporting that you are declining to receive the flu vaccine) via the Flu Vaccination Attestation or Declination form:

World Design Capital 2024 Design to Action Convening

The first San Diego-Tijuana World Design Capital 2024 Campus Convening will be on Dec. 9, 2022, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Design Lab in the Design and Innovation Building. Individuals interested in attending should fill out the online registration

The Design Lab at UC San Diego is a founding partner of World Design Capital 2024 program and is leading the Legacy Program, which involves the curation of legacy projects. As part of WDC 2024 legacy programming strategy, The Design Lab intends to identify, assess, select, and resource multinational legacy projects to ensure that the designation catalyzes and accelerates meaningful design transformation in our transborder, multinational region. It is imperative during this new phase of bid implementation that potential, current, and new research-action projects are identified within the regional network, to include colleagues at UC San Diego and other community, local, and regional academic institutions, in order to leverage the skills and talents at our academic institutions. For more details, or if you have any questions, please contact James White, Senior Program Manager at the Design Lab at jameswhite@ucsd.edu.

De-escalation Training Opportunity

UC San Diego’s Student Affairs Case Management Services will be hosting two, in-person, opportunities to attend a De-Escalation Training, facilitated by DGB Counseling and Consulting. The goal of this 2-hour training is to enhance UC San Diego’s faculty and staff de-escalation and active listening service skills; especially in academic situations that involve emotionally charged topics and language. The training sessions are open to both faculty and staff. A faculty/staff member must only attend (1) training sessions to be fully trained. Please share widely with any faculty or staff member you think may benefit from this training. Join the Interest List: https://forms.gle/vZrFyDW4fbaMH1jN9

These trainings are scheduled to take place on-campus on:

  • Monday, Dec. 12, 2022, from 12 to 2 p.m.
  • Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, 9 to 11 a.m.

Due to limited capacity, participation is not guaranteed. Those individuals confirmed into a training from the interest list will be contacted via email. It is also encouraged that units/departments submit the interest of a single representative who would be able to share lessons learned to their teams. Please select any/all dates you may be available to attend. The training will only be offered in-person and will not be recorded. For any general questions about the training, contact Andrew Hua at ahua@ucsd.edu. For any questions regarding registration or changes in registration, contact Diana Go at dgo@ucsd.edu
